The General Dutch Union of the Building and Wood Industries ( nl, Algemene Nederlandse Bond voor de Bouw- en Houtnijverheid, ANBH) was a trade union representing workers in the construction and wood industries in the Netherlands. The union was founded on 1 January 1970, when the General Dutch Construction Union merged with the General Industrial Union of Furniture Makers and Woodworkers. Like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV). By 1980, the union had 95,090 members, of whom, 89% worked in construction, and the remainder in woodworking and furniture making. The union began working closely with the Dutch Catholic Union of the Building and Wood Industries, forming a loose federation in 1973, and a more formal one in 1976, through which both unions then channeled all their activities. The General Dutch Construction Union ( nl, Algemeen Nederlandsche Bond van Bouwbedrijfsbond, ANB) was a trade union representing workers in the construction industry in the Netherlands. The union was founded on 11 January 1920, when the General Dutch Carpenters' Union merged with the Central Union of Building Workers, establishing the General Dutch Building Workers' Union. On formation, it had 21,678 members. Like both its forerunners, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV). In 1941, the Dutch Painters' Assistants' Union and the General Dutch Plasterers' Union both merged in. In 1951, the NVV reorganised its affiliates, to form industrial unions. The General Industrial Union of Furniture Makers and Woodworkers ( nl, Algemene Bedrijfsbond voor Meubilerings- en Houtbedrijven, ABMH) was a trade union representing workers involved in making things with wood in the Netherlands. The union was founded on 1 May 1871, as the Dutch Furniture Makers' Union, under the leadership of Bernardus Heldt. Later in the year, it was a founding affiliate of the General Dutch Workers' Union, of which Heldt also became the leader. However, in 1893, it left to join the National Labour Secretariat, and then in 1906 was a founding affiliate of the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV). The union affiliated to the International Federation of Woodworkers in 1906, in which it thereafter played a prominent role. The Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions ( nl, Nederlands Verbond van Vakverenigingen, NVV) was a Dutch social-democratic trade union. History The NVV was founded in 1906 as a merger of fifteen smaller unions, as a result of the inability of the previous unions to control the radical elements of the workers movement in the railworkers' strike of 1903. The NVV was led by Henri Polak, who was a prominent member of the socialist Social Democratic Workers' Party. During World War II the NVV was taken over by the German occupiers, its Dutch leader was Henk Woudenberg. Under the German occupation the NVV was transformed into a Nazi union. After the war these influences were purged and the NVV cooperated tightly with the centre left government to create a welfare state based on the principles of corporatism. Bram Buijs
Abraham Buijs (7 September 1923 – 4 January 1987) was a Dutch trade unionist and politician. Born in Arnemuiden, Buijs became a carpenter and joined the General Dutch Construction Union (ANB). He also joined the Labour Party, winning election to the local council in Vlissingen in 1949. In 1954, he became secretary of the ANB's Amsterdam branch, and in 1964 he became its president. As leader of the union, he took it into successive mergers, forming the General Dutch Union of Building and Wood Industries, and then the Construction and Wood Union.
