Gene Mangan
Eugene "Gene" Mangan (born 1936) is an Irish Cycle sport, cyclist. He won the Rás Tailteann in 1955. Early life Mangan is a native of County Kerry. He is a distant cousin of John Mangan, who also won the Rás. Career Mangan joined Killorglin Cycling Club in 1952. In that year, and in 1953, he won the County Kerry Road Championship. Mangan won the 1955 Rás Tailteann aged 18; he is still the youngest-ever winner. In 1958 Rás he won the last four stages, setting a record that still stands. Mangan also won several races at the Irish National Cycling Championships. Personal life Mangan married Maeve of Glenbeigh County Kerry . He was honoured at an event at Áras an Uachtaráin in 2000. Killorglin, County Kerry
Killorglin () is a town in County Kerry, Ireland. As of the 2016 Central Statistics Office of Ireland, CSO census, the town's population was 2,199. Killorglin is on the Ring of Kerry tourist route, and annual events include the August Puck Fair festival, which starts with the crowning and parading of a "king" wild goat. History Origins and development The earliest evidence of ancient settlement in the Killorglin area is the presence of Rock_art_of_Europe#Atlantic_European_rock_art, prehistoric rock art. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. Rás Tailteann
Rás Tailteann (; "Tailteann Race"), often shortened to the Rás, is an annual international cycling stage race, held in Ireland. Traditionally held in May, the race returned after a hiatus in 2022 as 5 day event held in June. By naming the race Rás Tailteann the original organisers, members of the National Cycling Association (NCA), were associating the cycle race with the Tailteann Games, a Gaelic festival in early medieval Ireland. The event was founded by Joe Christle in 1953 and was organised under the rules of the National Cycling Association (NCA). At that time competitive cycling in Ireland was deeply divided between three cycling organisations, the NCA, Cumann Rothaiochta na hÉireann (CRÉ) and the Northern Ireland Cycling Federation (NICF). John Mangan
John Mangan (born 1949/50) is an Irish cyclist. He won the Rás Tailteann in 1972. Early life Mangan is a native of Killorglin. Career In 1968 Mangan won the Junior Men's event at the Irish National Cycling Championships. Mangan took part in the ongoing struggle between the National Cycling Association (NCA) and Cumann Rothaíochta na hÉireann for the right to represent Ireland in international competition, participating in an attempt to infiltrate a team into the 1972 Olympic road race event. He pulled Noel Teggart from his bike in the individual road race, inspiring universal condemnation. He participated in many events in France, winning 156 continental races. Mangan suffered a skull fracture in 1983 and retired the following year. Irish National Cycling Championships
The Irish National Cycling Championships are annual cycling races to decide the Irish cycling champion for several disciplines, across several categories of rider. The men's road championship is usually held on a Sunday at end of June; the women's race is held the previous day. The winning élite rider wears the national champion's jersey for all road races in the following 12 months. The men's under-23 champion is awarded to the first under-23 in the élite race. The junior road races are held on the same day as the élite and the time-trial championship is earlier in the week. The national criteriums are later in the summer. Glenbeigh
Glenbeigh or Glanbehy () is a town and civil parish on the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The parish includes Rossbeigh beach, Coomasahran Lake and a number of important rock art sites. Owing to its natural heritage, history and its location on both the Ring of Kerry and Wild Atlantic Way, Glenbeigh is a tourist destination. (; "Residence of the President"), formerly the Viceregal Lodge, is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Ireland. It is located off Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
