Gender pay gap in Australia looks at the persistence of a gender pay gap in Australia. In Australia, the principle of " equal pay for equal work" was introduced in 1969. Anti-discrimination on the basis of sex was legislated in 1984. Despite this legislation, the difference between weekly average full-time earnings rose over the last two decades, going from a low of 14.9% in 2004 to a high of 18.9% in 2015. The pay gap has since returned to 14.1%, potentially the result of two newer pieces of legislation, the Workplace Gender Equality Act of 2012 and the Fair Work Act of 2009. Some labour organisations and researchers have criticised these Acts for containing significant limitations that hamper their effectiveness.
