Chadian National Gendarmerie
The Chadian National Gendarmerie (french: Gendarmerie nationale tchadienne) is the branch of the Military of Chad in charge of judicial policing, administrative policing, and military policing. Created by decree of August 17, 1961 No. 2 following the independence of Chad, it was directly inspired by the French National Gendarmerie. In 2014, it had 8,500 soldiers. Chad (; ar, تشاد , ; french: Tchad, ), officially the Republic of Chad, '; ) is a landlocked country at the crossroads of North and Central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon to the southwest, Nigeria to the southwest (at Lake Chad), and Niger to the west. Chad has a population of 16 million, of which 1.6 million live in the capital and largest city of N'Djamena. The Agence nationale de sécurité (ANS) is the intelligence agency of the Republic of Chad. It is the successor of the Documentation and Security Directorate (DDS) which was created by the former President Hissène Habré. The current director is Kogri Ahmed, who was appointed May 2013 by President Idriss Déby. While the ANS was not created as a law enforcement agency (those duties instead being done by the National Gendarmerie) they were given powers of arrest in 2017.
