Gemma Jones (sailor)
Gemma Jones (born 7 January 1994) is a New Zealand sailor. Sailing career Jones represented New Zealand at the 2012 and 2013 International Sailing Federation youth world championships, competing in the 420 and SL 16 catamaran classes. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Jones competed alongside Jason Saunders in the Nacra 17 event. Jones and Saunders finished fourth in the 2015 Nacra World Championships. Personal life Her father, Murray, was an America's Cup sailor. He has won the Americas Cup 5 times and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her mother Jan Shearer Janet Lee Shearer (born 17 July 1958) is a New Zealand sailor who competed for New Zealand at three Olympic Games and won a silver medal, with Leslie Egnot, at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, in the women's 470 class. Jason Saunders
Jason Saunders (born 22 November 1990) is a New Zealand sailor. Saunders was born in 1990 in Tauranga and received his education at Tauranga Boys' College that he attended with fellow Olympic sailors Sam Meech (born 1991) and Peter Burling (sailor), Peter Burling (born 1991) at the same time. Saunders competed in the Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's 470, 470 class at the 2012 Summer Olympics, with Paul Snow-Hansen. The team finished 5th. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Saunders competed alongside Gemma Jones (sailor), Gemma Jones in the Nacra 17 event, finishing in 4th. Previously the team had finished 4th at the 2015 Nacra 17 World Championships, and later finished in 4th place at the 2017 Nacra 17 World Championship, 2017 Nacra 17 World Championships. Nacra 17
The Nacra 17 is a performance catamaran used for sailing. It was designed in 2011, went into production in 2012 and has been the focus of multihull sailing at the Olympic Games since its conception. The Nacra has been converted to a sailing hydrofoil for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. History The Nacra 17 was specifically created to meet the criteria laid down for the new olympic discipline a first for Olympic sailing a mixed crewed boat. In May 2012 International Sailing Federation chose the Nacra 17 as the equipment for the mixed multi hull at the 2016 Olympic Sailing Regatta and 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Murray Jones (sailor)
Murray Selwyn Jones (born 1957 in Lower Hutt) is a New Zealand sailor. Sailing career Jones represented New Zealand in the Flying Dutchman (dinghy), Flying Dutchman class in 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. Jones finished Sailing at the 1988 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman, 5th in 1988 and Sailing at the 1992 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman, 4th in 1992, alongside Greg Knowles. Jones was part of Team New Zealand that won the America's Cup in 1995 America's Cup, 1995 and then defended the trophy in 2000 America's Cup, 2000. Jones was one of six prominent sailors who then left Team New Zealand and joined Alinghi, winning the 2003 America's Cup and 2007 America's Cup. America's Cup
The America's Cup, informally known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded in the sport of sailing. It is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy (known as the defender) and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup (the challenger). Matches are held several years apart on dates agreed between the defender and the challenger. There is no fixed schedule, but the races have generally been held every three to four years. A sailor, seaman, mariner, or seafarer is a person who works aboard a watercraft as part of its crew, and may work in any one of a number of different fields that are related to the operation and maintenance of a ship.
