Gelske Venema-Brouwe
Gelske Venema-Brouwer (6 January 1876 — 20 January 1957) was a Dutch female kortebaanschaatsen speed skater. During her 28-year speed skating career she won a total of 77 prizes and 20 premiums. Early life Brouwer was born in Achtkarspelen, the daughter of a sea captain. Later she moved to Bergum. As a child she showed skating ability, but her parents would not allow her to participate in speed skating competitions. Venema-Brouwer started with competitive speed skating in the winter of 1898–1899, after her marriage to Taeke Venema, also a skipper's child. Leeuwarden (; fy, Ljouwert, longname=yes /; Town Frisian: ''Liwwadden''; Leeuwarder dialect: ''Leewarden'') is a city and municipality in Friesland, Netherlands, with a population of 123,107 (2019). Appingedam
Appingedam (; gos, n Daam) is a city and former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. Although there is no certainty as to the exact age of Appingedam, historical research demonstrates that the place in which the city would eventually be built had been inhabited for over a millennium. Specifically, the area in which the earliest traces of human settlements have been reported is the Wierde, a quarter located in the northern part of the city centre. Today, a narrow, winding street by the same name runs along the waterfront as a living testimony to the times gone by. The characteristic landmarks of the old Wierde are still recognisable today: the historical East-West Canal, called “Diep,” dug to the south of the Wierde, diked on both sides, still defines the unique layout of the downtown Appingedam. The guilder ( nl, gulden, ) or florin was the currency of the Netherlands from the 15th century until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. The Dutch name ''gulden'' was a Middle Dutch adjective meaning "golden", and reflects the fact that, when first introduced in 1434, its value was about equal to (i.e., it was on par with) the Italian gold florin. The Dutch guilder was a ''de facto'' reserve currency in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between 1999 and 2002, the guilder was officially a "national subunit" of the euro. Tolbert, Netherlands
Tolbert is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Westerkwartier and forms a single urban area with Leek. History Tolbert is located in the region. The area was settled during the 10th and 11th century. It was first mentioned in 1479 as Oldebert. The name is a contraction of ''het'' (the definite article) ''ol(de)'' (old) and ''bert'' (village), and literally means "the old village". The church is from the 17th century, but contains 13th century parts. The parish dates from the 14th century. In 1794, Tolbert bought a seat in the States of Groningen from Aduard, and in 1795 was the seat of a municipality with Midwolde, and Oostwold. In 1795, it was home to 476 people. Roordahuizum
Reduzum ( nl, Roordahuizum) is a village in Leeuwarden municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,320 in January 2017. The community is notable for working towards a sustainable energy consumption within the village. History The village was first mentioned in the 1389 as Rorthahusum, and either means settlement of the people of Ruerd (person) or settlement belonging to Raerd. Reduzum is a ''terp'' (artificial living mound) settlement from the early Middle Ages. The Dutch Reformed church which probably dates from the 15th century was enlarged in 1726 and received its iconic entry gate. The church tower was built in 1878. Akkrum
Akkrum is a village in the Dutch province of Friesland. It is located in the municipality Heerenveen, about 17 km south of the city of Leeuwarden. Akkrum had about 3,395 inhabitants in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1315 as Ackrom. The etymology is unclear. Akkrum started as a ''terp'' (artificial living mound) village, and developed into a linear settlement which served as the regional centre. It started to grow when the main road Leeuwarden-Zwolle and later a railway line were built next to Akkrum. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1759 as a replacement of a medieval church. The tower dates from 1882. In 1840, Akkrum was home to 1,121 people. The polder mill Mellemolen was built in 1849 to drain excess water from the Polslootpolder.
