Kyōka Izumi
, real name , was a Japanese people, Japanese author of novels, short stories, and kabuki plays who was active during the Empire of Japan, prewar period. Kyōka's writing differed greatly from that of the naturalist writers who dominated the literary scene at the time. Many of Kyōka's works are surrealist critiques of society. He is best known for a characteristic brand of Romanticism preferring tales of the supernatural heavily influenced by works of the earlier Edo period in Japanese art#Art of the Edo period, Japanese arts and Japanese literature, letters, which he tempered with his own personal vision of aesthetics and art in the modern age. Sayuri Yoshinaga
is a Japanese actress and activist. She has won four Japan Academy Best Actress awards, more than any other actress, and has been called "one of the foremost stars in the postwar world of film." Kiichi Nakai
is a Japanese actor. His name was given by Yasujirō Ozu. His father, Keiji Sada, also a movie actor, died when Nakai was only two years old. Nakai started his acting career while he was still in university and was awarded the Rookie of the Year at the Japan Academy Awards in 1981. He won the Japan Academy Best Supporting Actor award in 1994 (for ''47 Ronin'') and Best Actor award in 2003 (for '' Mibu gishi den'' (''When the Last Sword is Drawn'')). He also won the award for best supporting actor at the 19th Hochi Film Award for ''47 Ronin''. In 2003 he played a Japanese delegate to a Chinese emperor of the Tang dynasty in ''Warriors of Heaven and Earth''. Though a few of his lines are in Japanese, most are in Mandarin. Genjiro Arato
was a Japanese film producer, actor and director. Career In 1980, Arato produced ''Zigeunerweisen'' for director Seijun Suzuki. He was unable to secure exhibitors for the film and famously exhibited it himself in a specially-built, inflatable, mobile tent. The film won four Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was voted the best Japanese film of the 1980s by Japanese critics. He also produced Tatsushi Ōmori's ''The Whispering of the Gods'' in 2005. In 1995, Arato directed ''The Girl of the Silence'', which stars Mami Nakamura and Kaori Momoi. He returned with the 2003 film, ''Akame 48 Waterfalls'', starring Takijirō Ōnishi, Michiyo Okusu and Shinobu Terajima. His 2010 film, ''The Fallen Angel'', starred Toma Ikuta. (born 25 April 1950) is a Kabuki actor, and the most popular and celebrated ''onnagata'' (an actor specializing in female roles) currently on stage. He has also acted in a handful of films. Life and career Born in 1950, Shin'ichi Morita was adopted by Morita Kan'ya XIV, and made his first appearance on stage at the age of seven, under the name Bandō Kinoji. At a ''shūmei'' (naming ceremony) in 1964 he became the fifth to take the name Bandō Tamasaburō; his adoptive father had been the fourth. Like all kabuki actors, Tamasaburō has devoted his life to the theater from a very young age. Nakamura Kanzaburō XVIII
, was a Japanese actor active in kabuki, other forms of live theatre, television and commercials. Kanzaburō was a versatile actor whose credits include farce, period pieces and Shin Kabuki. Lineage Kanzaburō was the eighteenth in the line of Nakamura Kanzaburō, his father the seventeenth. Kanzaburō actually traced his ancestry within the Nakamuraya kabuki guild back to his great-great-great grandfathers, if not further. Both his grandfathers were kabuki actors, as were their fathers. Kanzaburō was the younger brother of film actress Kuriko Namino. With his wife Yoshie, he had two sons, Nakamura Kankurō VI and Nakamura Shichinosuke II. Both perform kabuki, and in other venues.
