Gean Pamela O'Neil (1951-2018) was an international lawn and indoor bowler representing Jersey. Bowls career Gean was part of the fours team with Christine Grimes, Suzie Dingle and Karina Bisson that won the silver medal at the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Leamington Spa. In 2005 she won the singles and triples bronze medals at the Atlantic Bowls Championships. World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. The premier indoor event is the World Indoor Bowls Championships listed separately and is organised by the World Bowls Tour. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each of the four disciplines, and there is also a trophy for the best overall team — the Leonard Trophy for men and the Taylor Trophy for women. 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship
The 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship was held at the Northfield Bowls Complex in Ayr, Scotland, from 23 July to 7 August 2004 and Victoria Park, Leamington Spa in England one month later. Steve Glasson won the men's singles Gold defeating Alex Marshall in the final. Canada claimed the pairs, Scotland took the triples and Ireland won the fours. The Leonard Trophy was won by Scotland for the fifth time extending their impressive record. Originally the women's championships were going to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during 2003 but due to political reasons it was moved to England the following year. Atlantic Bowls Championships
The Atlantic Bowls Championships was a lawn bowling competition held between national bowls organisations in the Atlantic region. The event was a qualifying event for the World Outdoor Bowls Championships until the 2021 announcement that it would no longer be held. Originally the Championships were for women only and were called the Atlantic Rim Championships. In 2007 men competed for the first time at the event. The 2001 tournament due to be held in Namibia was cancelled due to opposition from the Namibia Sports Commission. The next tournament was held in 2005. British Isles Bowls Championships
The British Isles Bowls Championships is a tournament held between the champions of their respective nations, England Scotland, Wales, combined Ireland and more recently Guernsey and Jersey. It was first held in 1960 although the triples event did not start until 1977. The women's events started in June 1972, with the triples starting in 1982. The first women's singles winner was Lilian Nicholas of Wales. The first men's singles winner was Kenneth Coulson of England and the legendary David Bryant (bowls), David Bryant MBE holds the record for the most singles titles with four. The tournament is held the year after each of the National champions have been crowned. The 2020 edition was initially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but because there were no National Championships held during 2020 (also due to the pandemic) the 2020 edition was rescheduled for 2021. Christine Anne Grimes (born 25 December 1950) is an international lawn and indoor bowler representing Jersey. Bowls career Christine was part of the fours team with Suzie Dingle, Gean O'Neil and Karina Bisson that won the silver medal at the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Leamington Spa. Grimes has represented Jersey at four Commonwealth Games; in the triples at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the pairs at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the fours at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and in the pairs & fours at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Karina Anna Bisson (born 1966) is an international lawn and indoor bowler representing Jersey. Bowls career In 1997 under her maiden name Karina Horman she won triples silver medal at the Atlantic Bowls Championships. She then just missed out on a medal in the singles at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship after losing to the legendary Karen Murphy of Australia in the bronze medal play off by a score of 21–4.
