Gayeshwar Roy
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) politician and former State minister who is currently serving as a standing committee (the highest policy-making forum) member of the party. He was also a Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal member during 1970's. Early life Roy was born on 1 November 1951 in Dhaka district of the then East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to Gannandra Chandra Roy and Sumoti Roy. Career Roy was involved in progressive politics in his student life. In 1970's, he was a member of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. He He joined 'Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal', a political wing of the BNP in 1978. 1991 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament, winning 140 of the 300 directly-elected seats. The BNP formed a government with the support of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, and on 20 March Khaleda Zia was sworn in for her first term as Prime Minister. The elections were described to be free and fair by many international observers, and it played a major role in solidifying Bangladeshi democracy in aftermath of the anti-government protests in late 1980s.
