Gay And Lesbian Political Caucus
The Houston LGBTQ+ Political Caucus (also officially known as the HLGBTQPC) is the South's oldest civil rights organization dedicated solely to the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights. It was founded in 1975, and is the largest LGBTQ political organization in the city of Houston and Harris County. It is known locally simply as "The Caucus". The Caucus is nonpartisan and endorses candidates on the basis of their support for LGBTQ rights, regardless of political party or candidate's sexual orientation. Etymology In 1977 it was known as the Texas Gay Political Caucus. From 1980 to 1985 was known as the Houston Gay Political Caucus or simply the Gay Political Caucus. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movements are social movements that advocate for LGBT people in society. Some focus on equal rights, such as the ongoing movement for same-sex marriage, while others focus on liberation, as in the gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Earlier movements focused on self-help and self-acceptance, such as the homophile movement of the 1950s. Houston has a large and diverse LGBT population and is home to the 4th largest gay pride parade in the nation. Houston has the largest LGBT population of any city in the state of Texas. History According to Ray Hill, a Montrose resident quoted in the ''Houston Press'', before the 1970s, the city's gay bars were spread around Downtown Houston and what is now Midtown Houston. Gays and lesbians needed to have a place to socialize after the closing of the gay bars. They began going to Art Wren, a 24-hour restaurant in Montrose, a community of empty nesters and widows. Annise Danette Parker (born May 17, 1956) is an American politician who served as the 61st Mayor of Houston, Texas, from 2010 until 2016. Eleanor Tinsley
Eleanor Whilden Tinsley (October 31, 1926 – February 10, 2009) was an American city council and school board member. She was named to the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1988. The daughter of W. C. Whilden and Georgiabel Burleson, she was born in Dallas and grew up there. She was educated at the College of William and Mary and went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Baylor University. She married James Aubrey Tinsley in 1948 and moved to Houston in 1953; the couple had three children. Tinsley was active in school integration.
