Gay American Indians
Gay American Indians (GAI) was a gay rights organization founded in San Francisco in 1975 by Randy Burns (Northern Paiute) and Barbara May Cameron (Hunkpapa Lakota). It was notable for being the first association for queer Native Americans in the United States. Although initially a social group, GAI became involved in AIDS and Two-Spirit activism. History The founding of GAI took place in the context of the Red Power and gay liberation movements. Originally, it acted as a gathering space for gay and lesbian Natives from across the Bay Area, who were excluded from the gay bars in the Castro district because of their race. GAI was also intended to serve as a "support group," as queer American Indians were excluded not only from the majority-white gay community but from Indigenous communities as well, which often associated queerness with colonization. Will Roscoe (February 8, 1955) is an American activist, scholar, and author based in San Francisco, California. Early life Will Roscoe was born on February 8, 1955. He grew up in Missoula, Montana. Gay activism Roscoe helped found the Lambda Alliance at the University of Montana, that state's first LGBT organization in 1975. He served as an intern at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in 1976, and the following year he formed the Oregon Gay Alliance, a statewide coalition of LGBT groups. After relocating to San Francisco in 1978, he organized a successful campaign to obtain United Way membership for the Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley, the first LGBT social service agency in the nation to receive that status. Randy Burns (activist)
Randall R. Burns (born April 14, 1948) is an American folk singer, songwriter and guitarist who recorded several albums in the 1960s and early 1970s, when he performed with the Sky Dog Band. He has continued to perform and record occasionally. He is not to be confused with record producer Randy Burns, who has worked with such bands as Megadeth. Biography Burns was born and grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and began performing in coffee houses in the city aged 17. In 1966, he moved to Greenwich Village, New York City, where he busked before being recruited as the regular opening act at The Gaslight Cafe on Macdougal Street. The gay liberation movement was a social and political movement of the late 1960s through the mid-1980s that urged lesbians and gay men to engage in radical direct action, and to counter societal shame with gay pride.Hoffman, 2007, pp.xi-xiii.
