Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation
Gawad Kalinga (GK) ("to give care" in Tagalog) is a Philippine non-governmental organization known officially as the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation. It describes itself as a "poverty alleviation and nation-building movement". Its mission is to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024. History In 1999, Couples for Christ (CFC) built the first GK house for the Adduru family from Bagong Silang, a barangay in which the organization had previously held poverty programs. The name "Gawad Kalinga", which translates in the Filipino language either as "to give care" or "to award care," was coined in 2000. Tony Meloto
Antonio "Tony" Meloto (born January 17, 1950) is the founder of Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based poverty alleviation movement. Meloto was named 2006 "Filipino of the Year" by the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Early life and career Antonio Meloto was born on January 17, 1950, in Bacolod, Negros Occidental, to a middle-class family. He took his senior high school year at De Anza High School in Richmond, California, as an AFS Intercultural Programs, American Field Service scholar. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics degree from Ateneo de Manila University, studying as a full academic scholar and graduating in 1971.
