Gawa, Elcho Island
Gawa is a place on Elcho Island in the Arnhem Land of Northern Territory, Australia. Elcho Island is situated about 90 kilometres west-north-west of the Gove Peninsula in the Arafura Sea. Approximately 60 km long and 6 km wide, it is home for some 1,000 Indigenous Australians whose homelands are scattered on Elcho, several neighbouring islands and surrounding mainland regions. Elcho Island is one of the most remote communities in Australia. Early history Historically, Gäwa, on the northern tip of Elcho Island, was a meeting place for Indigenous groups long before white people came to these shores. The seafaring Macassans from Indonesia visited Elcho Island to collect trepang, a sea animal that is to be found lying on the sea bed, a Chinese delicacy. Green Actors Of West Africa
Green Actors of West Africa (GAWA) is a network of environmental organizations from West Africa created in 2005. The goal of GAWA Network is to develop ways of enhancing cooperation and coordination between and among the various donors and environmental (nature conservation) actors in this sub-African region. The geographic coverage of GAWA network members includes: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Togo. History The initial concept of Green Actors in West Africa was first discussed in September 2004 during a meeting of NC-IUCN’s West African partners in Aburi, Ghana. In a later meeting in April 2005 in Cotonou, Benin, the decision was reached to formalize the network. The Green and White Army are fans that follow the Northern Ireland national football team, noted for their passionate support. The support at Windsor Park, the home of the Northern Ireland national football team, is sometimes referred to as the team's "12th man". After Northern Ireland beat England 1-0 at Windsor Park on 7 September 2005, the manager Lawrie Sanchez said "The fans were also magnificent and we played with an extra man - they raised the team, they believed in the team and the team gave it back in bundles."
