Gavin Williams (sociologist)
Gavin P. Williams (born in Pretoria in 1943) is an Africanist, sociologist and political economist. Since 2010 he has been an Emeritus Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford, where he previously taught politics and sociology from 1975 until 2010. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch with a BA degree, Williams wrote his B. Phil. thesis with a Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford, on the political sociology of Western Nigeria. At Durham University he lectured on sociology during 1967 to 1970 and 1972 to 1975. He was a research fellow at the University of Sussex and associate at the Nigerian Institute Of Social And Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan from 1970-1972. On examination of his published work he received a D. Litt. degree from Rhodes University in South Africa in 2013. Gavin Williams (born 25 October 1979) is a former rugby union player from New Zealand, who played in the Top 14 and for Samoa national rugby union team, Samoa internationally. Williams previously played for Connacht Rugby, Connacht, where he played from 2005 until the end of the 2006–07 season. After leaving Connacht, he went on to make his debut for Samoa in 2007 in a match against . Williams scored a try and conversion in Samoa's opening game in the RWC2007, 2007 World Cup. Gavin John Williams (born 20 July 1980 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan) is a Welsh former international footballer who was most recently the manager of Merthyr Town. Club career Hereford United Williams started his career as a YTS player at Hereford United having previously trained with Cardiff City. He made his first team debut at the age of 17, as a substitute in the 3–0 FA Cup victory over Sittingbourne. He made twelve more appearances that season and scored his first goal against Dover Athletic in the Conference. By the 1998–99 season he was a first team regular playing in a variety of positions in midfield and up front. Gavin Anjez Williams (born 18 November 1984) is an Antiguan cricketer who has played for the Leeward Islands in West Indian domestic cricket. Williams played a single match for the Antigua and Barbuda national team at the 2008 Stanford 20/20 tournament, against the U.S. Virgin Islands. Gavin Scott Williams (born July 26, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2023. Amateur career Williams attended Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. As a senior in 2017, he threw two consecutive no-hitters after returning to play after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus. He ended his senior year 6–1 with a 0.35 ERA over 39 innings. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 30th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, but did not sign, instead enrolling at East Carolina University. In 2018, as a freshman at East Carolina, Williams missed time due to a forearm strain but still compiled a 1.15 ERA over innings. After the 2018 season, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
