Gavin Davis
Gavin Davis (born 3 August 1977) is a former Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's official opposition. Background Davis was born in London in the United Kingdom, but grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. He holds Honours and master's degrees in politics and economics from Rhodes University, the University of Cape Town and the University of London. His interests include education, electoral systems and campaigning, media and elections, public broadcasting, social media and liberalism in South African politics. Political Communications Davis joined the DA as a Researcher in 2004 and was later appointed Chief of Staff in the Leader's Office. The Parliament of the Republic of South Africa is South Africa's legislature; under the present Constitution of South Africa, the bicameral Parliament comprises a National Assembly and a National Council of Provinces. Nick Clelland
Nicholas John Clelland (born 25 February 1972) is a South African politician, communications professional and author. Political career Clelland was elected to the Durban Metropolitan Council in 1996. He was then elected as a Democratic Party Member of Parliament in 1999 at the age of 27, making him one of South Africa's youngest Members of Parliament. Clelland served as Parliamentary Counsellor to the Leader of the Opposition and as the Democratic Alliance's first National Spokesperson. Tony Leon
Anthony James Leon (born 15 December 1956) is a South African politician who served as leader of the opposition from 1999-2007 as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He led the DA from its inception in 2000, until his retirement from leadership in 2007. Before that, he led the Democratic Party from 1994. He is the longest serving leader of the official opposition in parliament since the advent of democracy in 1994. Although still a member of the DA, he served as the South African Ambassador to Argentina under the ANC government from 2009 to 2012. Zandile Ellen Tshabalala also known as Ellen Tshabalala is a former Chairperson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She was appointed Chairperson of the Board in September 2013, having previously served for six months prior as acting SABC Chairperson. She resigned on Wednesday, 17 December 2014.She died on 03 July 2022. In July 2014, it emerged that she allegedly lied on her CV when she applied for the post of Chairperson of the SABC. SABC
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is the public broadcaster in South Africa, and provides 19 radio stations ( AM/ FM) as well as six television broadcasts to the general public. It is one of the largest of South Africa's state-owned enterprises. Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the "whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators, or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping. Otta Helene Maree (''née'' Zille ; born 9 March 1951), known as Helen Zille, is a South African politician. She has served as the Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019, she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms, and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
