Gavdos
Gavdos ( el, Γαύδος, ) is the southernmost Greek island, located to the south of its much larger neighbour, Crete, of which it is administratively a part, in the regional unit of Chania. It forms a community with surrounding islets and was part of the former Selino Province. The island is situated at the southern tip of Greece; it is the southernmost point of Europe. Name Gavdos has been known by a wide variety of names. For example, it appears in the biblical account of Paul's journey to Rome in Acts 27 as "Clauda" () or "Cauda" (). The island was also referred to as "Cauda" by Roman geographer Pomponius Mela, and as "Gaudos" by Pliny. Ptolemy called Gavdos "Claudos" (). The Venetians called it "Gotzo", perhaps in imitation of the Maltese island " Gozo". From the 17th to the 19th centuries, the island was known as "Gondzo". A Turkish name of Godzo was "Bougadoz". Gavdopoula
Gavdopoula ( el, Γαυδοπούλα, ) is an islet located north-west of its larger neighbour, Gavdos, in the Libyan Sea. It is located to the south of Crete, of which it is administratively a part, in the regional unit of Chania. It is part of the municipality of Gavdos, and it was part of the former Selino Province. Nature Gavdopoula is covered with phrygana (φρύγανα) low-lying shrubs. It is an important stop for migrating birds. Important Bird Area Both Gavdos and Gavdopoula have been designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because they support resident populations of European shags and Eurasian scops owls as well as passage migrants. Proposed container shipping development In 1998 the islet was the proposed site of an enormous container shipping storage facility. Chania (regional Unit)
Chania ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Χανίων) is one of the four regional units of Greece, regional units of Crete; it covers the westernmost quarter of the island. Its capital is the city of Chania. Chania borders only one other regional unit: that of Rethymno (regional unit), Rethymno to the east. The western part of Crete is bounded to the north by the Sea of Crete, Cretan Sea, and to the west and south by the Mediterranean Sea. Selino Province
Selino is a historical region and a former province of Crete. It is located in the remote southwestern corner of the island, in the Chania regional unit. It is a rugged and remote area in the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and also includes Gavdos, an island to the south of Crete considered the southernmost point in Europe. Selino's historical capital is Kandanos, but its largest village is Palaiochora. Sougia is a small but growing resort. The region's name derives from the Venetian castle at Palaiochora, 'Kastello Selino'. The territory of the province corresponded with that of the current municipalities Kantanos-Selino and Gavdos. Chora Sfakion
