Gavan McCarthy
Gavan McCarthy (born 16 May 1945) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). McCarthy, who was recruited from Yea, made two appearances for North Melbourne in the 1965 VFL season. His brother, Bernie McCarthy, was his teammate in the second of those matches, against Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval. Yea Football Club (colloquially known as The Tigers) is an Australian rules football club based in the Victoria (Australia), Victorian town of Yea, Victoria, Yea. The club competes in the Outer East Football Netball League. North Melbourne Football Club
The North Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos, is a professional Australian rules football club. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Kangaroos also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. 1965 VFL Season
The 1965 VFL season was the 69th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 17 April until 25 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the twelfth time, after it defeated by 35 points in the 1965 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1965, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. Bernie McCarthy
Bernard Francis McCarthy (21 August 1943 – 16 February 2019) was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). McCarthy was the eldest of three brothers from Yea who played in the VFL. The youngest, Shane, played at Geelong and the other, Gavan McCarthy, made two appearances for North Melbourne, one of them with Bernie in round five of the 1965 VFL season. A nephew, Matthew, was also a Geelong footballer and another, John, played at Collingwood and Port Adelaide. A centre half-forward, McCarthy partnered John Dugdale as North Melbourne's key forwards throughout the 1960s. He finished the 1971 season at Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Preston and was one of the club's best players in the Grand Final loss to Dandenong that year. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. Shane McCarthy (born 22 April 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). McCarthy, a defender, came from Yea originally and was a student at Assumption College. He appeared for Geelong in the final two home and away rounds of the 1970 VFL season and in round eight of the 1971 season. McCarthy is now a lawyer who lives in Sorrento, Victoria. His brothers Bernie McCarthy and Gavan McCarthy also played in the Victorian Football League, at North Melbourne.
