Gause, Texas
Gause is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Milam County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 400 in 2000. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 275. Geography Gause is located at (30.7851923, -96.7213641 ). It is situated along U.S. Highway 79/ 190, sixteen miles southeast of Cameron and twenty-nine miles west of Bryan/ College Station. History The community is named for William J. Gause, a settler who moved to the area in 1872 and built a home out of lumber hauled from Montgomery. In 1873, he gave right-of-way and of land to the International-Great Northern Railroad (I&GN). This caused the area to grow and a post office opened in 1874. A schoolhouse that doubled as a church was built in 1876. Cameron is a city in Milam County, Texas, United States. Its population was 5,306 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Milam County. Geography Cameron is located at (30.854544, –96.978716). James Robert Wills (March 6, 1905 – May 13, 1975) was an American Western swing musician, songwriter, and bandleader. Considered by music authorities as the founder of Western swing, he was known widely as the King of Western Swing (although Spade Cooley self-promoted the moniker "King of Western Swing" from 1942 to 1969). Wills formed several bands and played radio stations around the South and West until he formed the Texas Playboys in 1934 with Wills on fiddle, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, rhythm guitarist June Whalin, tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills, and Kermit Whalin who played steel guitar and bass. Oklahoma guitar player Eldon Shamblin joined the band in 1937 bringing jazzy influence and arrangements. The band played regularly on Tulsa, Oklahoma, radio station KVOO and added Leon McAuliffe on steel guitar, pianist Al Stricklin, drummer Smokey Dacus, and a horn section that expanded the band's sound. Joe Gregg Moore, Sr. (December 25, 1908 – April 1, 2001) was a left fielder in Major League Baseball who played his entire career with the New York Giants from 1930 through 1941. Moore batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He was born in Gause, Texas and nicknamed the "Gause Ghost." He was 5' 11" and weighed 155 pounds. Moore was an intimidating, left-handed-hitting leadoff man, a line-drive hitter who hit over .300 five times in his major league career and led the National League in at-bats in 1935. The free-swinging Moore never struck out more than 37 times in a season, collecting only 247 SO in 5427 at-bats (4.6%). John Anthony "Ox" Miller (May 4, 1915 – August 13, 2007) was a professional baseball pitcher. He played parts of four seasons in Major League Baseball, between 1943 and 1947, for the Washington Senators (1901–60), Washington Senators (1943), St. Louis Browns (1943, 1945–46) and Chicago Cubs (1947). Ruthie Cecelia Foster (born February 10, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter of blues and folk music. She mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul.
