Gauripur, India
Gauripur (IPA: ˈgɑʊrɪˌpʊə or ˈgɔːrɪˌpʊə) is a semi-urban town under Gauripur Town Committee in the Dhubri district in the state of Assam, India. Geography Gauripur is located at in the state of Assam. Its average elevation is 26 metres (85 feet). The nearest airport is situated at Rupsi, adjacent to the village Khudimari. Gauripur is a small town on the western side of the district headquarters Dhubri. The main town is near the eastern shore of the river Gadadhar. There is a lake on its north-western side named Laokhowa beel and on the north-eastern side, on the bank of Gadadhar, is a small hill-top called Matiabagh, on which the palace "Hawakhana" erected by the Zamindar of Gauripur is found. On the other side of the Gadadhar river is the famous village Asharikandi, of international fame for its terrakota industry. Rebati Mohan Dutta Choudhury
Rebati Mohan Dutta Choudhury (1924–2008) was a noted Assamese litterateur, Sahitya Akademi Award winner and an academician from Gauripur in Assam, India. Popularly he is known as ''Sheelabhadra'', his pen name. Early life and education Born in 1924 at Gauripur in Dhubri District, Dutta Choudhury pursued his graduation from Carmichael College, Rangpur (now in Bangladesh). He obtained his post-graduation in Pure Mathematics from Calcutta University in 1946, with a first class and silver medal. Career After his post-graduated studies, he joined Cotton College, Guwahati as a lecturer in Mathematics. Subsequently, he became a contractor, a sub-editor with the Assam Tribune and assistant manager in a tea estate for some time and finally he restarted his teaching career in the Assam Engineering College, Guwahati in 1957 as a lecturer. Pratima Barua Pandey (3 October 1934 – 27 December 2002) was an Indian folk singer from the royal family of Gauripur in Western Assam's Dhubri district. Barua Pandey, a national awardee, best known for her Goalpariya (Koch Rajbongshi / Kamatapuri/ Deshi) songs ''Hastir Kanya'' and ''Mur Mahut Bandhure'', was the daughter of Prakritish Chandra Barua (Lalji) and niece of filmmaker Pramathesh Barua of ''Devdas'' fame. Early life Barua Pandey was born on 3 October 1934, in Calcutta. She pursued her early education in the city's Gokhale Memorial School, after which she came to Assam to study at the Girls’ High School, Gauripur, home of the royal family. Pramathesh Chandra Barua (24 October 1903 – 29 November 1951) was an Indian actor, director, and screenwriter of Indian films in the pre-independence era, born in Gauripur, Dhubri, Assam. Early life Barua was the son of the royal family of Gauripur (belongs to Gauripur Rajvanch), Dhubri,Assam, where he was born and spent his childhood.
