''Gauntlet'' is an unreleased Nintendo DS hack and slash dungeon crawl video game developed by Backbone Entertainment, based on the 1985 arcade game by the Gauntlet (1985 video game), same title. The game was originally announced in April 2008, and was scheduled to be released later that year. Gameplay Press releases and previews of the game characterized it as "retro", with gameplay based on the first two titles in the ''Gauntlet'' series, with some additions such as the Experience point#Level-based progression, character leveling system introduced in ''Gauntlet Legends''. The four original classes from the series, Warrior (character class), Warrior, Valkyrie, Elves in fantasy fiction and games#Elves in role-playing games, Elf and Wizard (character class), Wizard, return, along with a number of "fan favourite" enemies. Also included are newly recorded versions of the series' trademark speech samples, whereby a narrator announces events occurring in-game with statements such as ...

Backbone Entertainment was an American video game developer based in Emeryville, California. The company was formed in 2003 as the result of a merger between developers Digital Eclipse and ImaginEngine. In 2005, Backbone merged with The Collective (company), The Collective to form Foundation 9 Entertainment. History Backbone Entertainment was formed in 2003 through a merger between Digital Eclipse, a developer of Video game emulation, emulations of arcade games, and ImaginEngine, an edutainment games developer. ImaginEngine remained an independent studio, based in Framingham, Massachusetts, while Digital Eclipse's studios were absorbed by Backbone, becoming Backbone Emeryville and Backbone Vancouver, respectively. In 2004, in co-operation with the University of Hawaii, Backbone opened an office in Honolulu, Hawaii, under the lead of Backbone's chairman, Mark Loughridge.
