Gastouni ( el, Γαστούνη) is a town and a former municipality in Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Pineios, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 59.325 km2. Gastouni is situated in a flat rural area, 5 km from the Ionian Sea. The river Pineios flows into the sea near Gastouni. The town is south of Andravida, east of Vartholomio, northwest of Amaliada and northwest of Pyrgos. Georgios Sisinis
Georgios Sisinis ( el, Γεώργιος Σισίνης, 1769–1831) was a Greek revolutionary leader and politician of the Greek War of Independence. Biography He was born in Gastouni in Elis, to a rich and historic family of the area. Georgios, his father Chrysanthos and his three brothers, who died young, were all physicians. During the Ottoman rule, he was a primate (''prokritos'') of Gastouni. He became a member of the Filiki Eteria in 1819. In 1821, as the Ottoman authorities suspected the Greeks of planning a revolution, he was requested to come to Tripolitsa along with other primates; at the suggestion of Germanos of Old Patras, he feigned illness and did not attend. Sisinis proclaimed the start of the Greek War of Independence in Elis, and was one of the most important contributors to the Greek struggle. Elis (regional Unit)
Elis or Ilia ( el, Ηλεία, ''Ileia'') is a historic region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011 it was Elis Prefecture, covering the same territory. The modern regional unit is nearly coterminous with the ancient Elis of the classical period. Lefkochori ( el, Λευκοχώρι) is a village in the municipal unit of Gastouni, Elis. Its population was 546 at the 2011 census. It is situated in a flat rural area, on the left bank of the river Pineios, at about 10 m elevation. It is 1 km southeast of Kavasila, 2 km northwest of Koroivos, 3 km west of Agia Mavra and 3 km northeast of Gastouni. The Greek National Road 9 ( Patras - Pyrgos) and the railway from Patras to Pyrgos pass west of the village. Kavasila, Elis
Kavasila ( el, Καβάσιλα, also Καβάσιλας) is a village in the municipal unit of Gastouni, Elis, Greece. Its population is around 1,500. It is situated in a flat rural area, on the right bank of the river Pineios, at about elevation. It is northwest of Lefkochori, east of Kardiakafti, south of Andravida and northeast of Gastouni. Kavasila had a train station on the line from Patras to Kalamata via Pyrgos. A branch line to Vartholomio and Kyllini was shut down around 2001. The Greek National Road 9 (Patras - Pyrgos) passes east of the village. Chrysanthos Sisinis (died 1845)
Chrysanthos Sisinis (Greek: Χρύσανθος Σισίνης, died 1845) was a Greek revolutionary leader and a politician. He was born in Gastouni and was the son of Georgios Sisinis. He fought at the battles of Patras, Athens, Messolongi and several other battles. He was jailed together with his father in the civil period as an adherent of Kolokotronis. After his release, he entered politics and was elected many times as a representative for Elis. He died in 1845. Koroivos ( el, Κόροιβος, before 1955: Κελεβή - ''Kelevi'') is a village in the municipal unit of Gastouni, Elis, Greece. It is situated in a flat rural area, south of the river Pineios. It is 2 km southeast of Lefkochori, 2 km west of Roupaki, 2 km southwest of Agia Mavra and 4 km east of Gastouni. Andravida ( el, Ανδραβίδα, ) is a town and a former municipality in Elis, in the northwest of the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Andravida-Kyllini, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 40.728 km2. Its population is about 4,300. The town was the capital of the Frankish Principality of Achaea in the late Middle Ages. Location Andravida is located in the plains of northwestern Elis, at about 7 km from the Ionian Sea coast. Vartholomio
Vartholomio ( el, Βαρθολομιό) is a town and a former municipality in Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Pineios, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 60.696 km2. Its population was 5,899 in 2011, of which 3,603 lived in the town proper. The municipal unit covers the southern part of the hilly Kyllini peninsula, and the plains to the southeast. The town Vartholomio is in the plains, on the right bank of the river Pineios, which flows into the Ionian Sea south of the town. The town was at the junction of two railway lines, one from Kavasila to Kyllini, and the branch Vartholomio–Loutra Kyllinis railway line. Both railways have been dismantled.
