Gaston Strobino
Gaston Maurice Strobino (August 23, 1891 – March 30, 1969) was an American athlete and runner. He won the bronze medal in the marathon event at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Biography Strobino was born in Büren an der Aare, Switzerland, by Italian family of Mosso Santa Maria (Biella, Italy) and moved from Italy to Paterson, New Jersey as a young man. He lived in South Paterson and worked as a toolmaker. Running career Strobino competed for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden in the marathon at the age of 20. The Olympic marathon was the first time he had ever raced the distance before, having qualified in a 12-mile race in New York City. The race was notable for being run in particularly harsh conditions, with temperatures reaching 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Büren An Der Aare
Büren an der Aare (usually abbreviated with Büren a.A., means ''Büren on the Aare'') is a historic town and a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Büren an der Aare is first mentioned in 1185 as ''Buirro''. In 1236 it was mentioned as ''Buron''. The formerly independent village of Reiben was first mentioned in 1309. It became part of Büren an der Aare in 1911. The earliest trace of humans in Büren are scattered neolithic and La Tene items. The Roman era road between Aventicum and Salodurum (Solothurn) runs through the area that would become the municipality. Roman ruins include part of the road and a milestone at Bürenmoos, a canal at Burgweg and what may have been a country estate on Kirchmatt. Ken McArthur
Kennedy Kane "Ken" McArthur (February 10, 1881 – June 13, 1960) is most noted as a track and field athlete and winner of the marathon at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Biography Born in Dervock, County Antrim, Ireland, McArthur was recognised as a promising athlete as a teenager, but he didn't pursue an athletics career until after emigrating to South Africa in 1901 at the age of 20. After joining the Johannesburg Police Force in 1906, McArthur begun to take athletics seriously. Soon he had won the Transvaal half and one mile championships, the five mile track championship and also two national cross country championships. McArthur ran his first marathon late in the 1908 season, and surprisingly beat the Olympic silver medalist Charles Hefferon. He also won the national one and ten mile championships.
