Colonel Nicholas Gassaway (baptized 11 March 1634 – between 10 and 27 January 1691 Julian Calendar) was a colonial military and political leader and justice in early Maryland. Percy Lee Gassaway
Percy Lee Gassaway (August 30, 1885 – May 15, 1937) was an American politician and a U.S. Representative from Oklahoma. Biography Born in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, Gassaway was the son of Rev. B. F. and Elizabeth Scoggins Gassaway. He moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma (then Indian Territory), with his parents in 1899. A few years later the Gassaway family returned to Texas and purchased the Sinclair Ranch in Lipscomb County. He attended the public schools in Fort Sill and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He married Laura Weaver, and they had a daughter. Following a divorce, Gassaway traveled in the West and lived for a time in Mexico. Upon his return to the United States, he married Linnie Weeks, and the couple had two sons and a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce. Charles Cason Gassaway (August 12, 1918 – January 15, 1992) nicknamed "Sheriff", was an American professional baseball player, a left-handed pitcher whose 16-season (1937–52) playing career included all or parts of three seasons in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs (1944), Philadelphia Athletics (1945), and Cleveland Indians (1946). Frank Harrison Gassaway was a noted American humorist and poet who often wrote under the pseudonym Derrick Dodd. Dodd is perhaps most well known for his travel letters ''Summer Saunterings'' published under this pseudonym. Although little is known of his personal life before he became a prominent writer in California, save that he was of a Virginian family, Dodd apparently married a southern belle from Washington, D.C., named Elizabeth Paschal and fathered a son, Francis, in 1874 or 1875. Dodd's grandson was the writer Brian Howard. Gassaway is a town in Braxton County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 769 at the 2020 census. Gassaway was incorporated in 1905 and named for Henry Gassaway Davis, the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1904. The center of population of West Virginia is located approximately north of Gassaway. History The town was originally created at the ends of two divisions of the Coal and Coke Railway, one originating in Charleston and the other originating in Elkins. Because of its central location, the area was an ideal place to build shops to facilitate the transition between the relatively flat Charleston division, which could operate with standard equipment, and the more hilly Elkins division of the Coal & Coke which required heavier engines.
