Gaspar De Verlit
Gaspar de Verlit or Gaspar Verlit (1622–1682) was a Flemish Baroque composer active in Brussels. Life He was first chorister and later also a singer at the court chapel in Brussels, choirmaster at St. Vincent's Church in Soignies ( Zinnik) and singing master at St. Nicolas Church in Brussels. In 1658, he became chaplain at the court chapel. He published two anthologies: (1661 and 1668). Further, four more sacred works survive, of which one has not been completely preserved. The ''Cantiones Natalitiae'' appeared in 1660. Such Christmas carols were also published by Brussels composer Ioannes Florentius a Kempis, organist at the ‘Chapel of Our Lady’ Church. Baroque music ( or ) refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period, and was followed in turn by the Classical period after a short transition, the galant style. An antiphon (Greek ἀντίφωνον, ἀντί "opposite" and φωνή "voice") is a short chant in Christian ritual, sung as a refrain. The texts of antiphons are the Psalms. Their form was favored by St Ambrose and they feature prominently in Ambrosian chant, but they are used widely in Gregorian chant as well. They may be used during Mass, for the Introit, the Offertory or the Communion. They may also be used in the Liturgy of the Hours, typically for Lauds or Vespers. Guillielmus Borremans
Guiglielmus Borremans or Willem Borremans was a Flemish composer and the choir master of the Saint Gaugericus Church in Brussels. Life and work In 1660, he published in Antwerp, at the editing house of Petrus Phalesius' descendants, a series of Christmas songs in four parts and with Dutch and Latin texts, which bore the title: ''Cantiones natalitiae quinque vocum auctore d. Guiliel. Borremans in ecclesia parochiali S. Gaucerici Bruxellis phonasco. Antwerp: Apud haeredes Petri Phalesii, 1660''. The melody was put in the upper voice. The ''praecentus'' doubled the ''cantus.'' It is not clear what this meant. The soloist might have been singing in front, while the choir sang in the background.
