Garza is a Galician and Basque surname and the Spanish word for the heron. ''Garza'' has also become a part of many placenames. Garza was the surname of many Sephardi Jews that settled in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico and the name is still found in many famous people from that Mexican state. José Venustiano Carranza de la Garza (; 29 December 1859 – 21 May 1920) was a Mexican wealthy land owner and politician who was Governor of Coahuila when the constitutionally elected president Francisco I. Madero was overthrown in a February 1913 right-wing military coup. Known as the ''Primer Jefe'' or "First Chief" of the Constitutionalist faction in the Mexican Revolution, Carranza was a shrewd civilian politician. He supported Madero's challenge to the Díaz regime in the 1910 elections, but became a critic of Madero once Díaz was overthrown in May 1911. Madero did appoint him the governor of Coahuila. Roque Victoriano González Garza (March 23, 1885 – November 12, 1962) was a Mexican general and acting president of the Republic from January to June 1915. Early years in politics From 1908 he appeared in politics in opposition to the government of President Porfirio Díaz. He was one of the first supporters of Francisco I. Madero, whom he accompanied in his presidential campaign. He was director of revolutionary forces in Coahuila, and a federal deputy.
