Gary Young (drummer)
Gary Young (born May 3, 1953) is an American musician and music producer best known as the original drummer of the indie rock band Pavement from its inception in 1989 until his departure in 1993. Early life Gary Young was born in Mamaroneck, New York. His father, Bob Young, was an engineer in the plastics business with deep knowledge of carbon fiber. He worked with Ned Steinberger in the development of the construction of his electric bass for the Steinberger company. Career Early career: 1984–1989 In the 1980s, Young booked musical acts to play around Stockton, including Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks and Black Flag. Early in the decade, he played in the punk band The Fall of Christianity with Brian Thalken of The Authorities. Pavement: 1989–1993; 2010 Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg formed Pavement in Stockton, CA in 1989. Mamaroneck (village), New York
Mamaroneck is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 18,929 at the 2010 census. its population was an estimated 19,131. It is located partially within the town of Mamaroneck and partially within the town of Rye. The portion in Rye is unofficially called "Rye Neck". The Rye Neck Union Free School District contains the Rye Neck portion of Mamaroneck and part of the city of Rye. History Originally, the farming community of Mamaroneck was located on two sides of the Mamaroneck River. In the 1890s, the two areas surrounding the river were joined into one commercial village, Mamaroneck, which was incorporated in 1895. The eastern side of the village lies in the town of Rye and is known as Rye Neck. Hospital is the debut studio album by the American musician Gary Young and his backing band Hospital, released in 1994. It was Young's first solo effort after being asked to leave the band Pavement. Background and recording The album was recorded in Stockton, California, at Young's studio. "Geri" is about Young's wife. A video was produced for "Plant Man". Young promoted the album by playing the on 1995 Lollapalooza tour. Critical reception AllMusic described it as "a roller coaster of chaotic and disjointed songs." The series follows Beavis and Butt-Head, both voiced by Judge, a pair of teenage slackers characterized by their apathy, lack of intelligence, lowbrow humor, and love for hard rock and heavy metal music. ''Major Leagues'' is the final EP by American indie rock band Pavement. It was released on October 12, 1999, on Matador Records. To date, it is their final release of original material excluding reissues. Background The EP contains seven tracks: A radio edit of the '' Terror Twilight'' version of "Major Leagues." Two "Spiral Stairs" songs: "Your Time to Change," and "Stub Your Toe," which were recorded by Pavement's original drummer, Gary Young (lead singer Stephen Malkmus most likely did not attend these sessions due to his feud with Young). A demo of "Major Leagues" recorded alone by Malkmus. "Decouvert de Soleil," which features Stephen Malkmus switching back between English and French. The sound and instrumentation of the song is very similar to that of the "Major Leagues" demo, so it could be safe to assume that the singer recorded this track alone as well. ''Watery, Domestic'' is the fourth EP by American indie rock band Pavement. It is their final release to feature drummer Gary Young as a member. Background The record marked the recording debuts of both Bob Nastanovich and Mark Ibold on percussion and bass respectively - although both had been touring members for some time, the debut album, ''Slanted and Enchanted'' and the preceding EPs had been recorded by a trio of Stephen Malkmus, Spiral Stairs and Gary Young. Recording All four songs can also be found on '' Slanted and Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe'', the liner notes to which identify a further 3 songs as having been recorded during the same session. ''Slanted and Enchanted'' is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Pavement, released on April 20, 1992 by Matador Records. It is the only Pavement album to feature drummer Gary Young. The album received critical acclaim and is seen as a landmark for indie rock, with ''Rolling Stone'' ranking it 199th on its 2020 edition of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
