Gary Yates (cricketer)
Gary Yates (born 20 September 1967 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire) is a former English cricketer, an off-spinner who played for Lancashire from 1989 to 2004 takin184first-class wickets. He subsequently became 2nd team captain and coach. He has been assistant coach at Lancashire since 2008. Yates attended Manchester Grammar School where he played alongside future England cricket captain Michael Atherton and future Lancs and Notts player Mark Crawley Mark Andrew Crawley (born 16 December 1967) is a former English cricketer. Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. The population was 45,198 at the 2011 census. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the north bank of the River Tame, in the foothills of the Pennines, east of Manchester. Evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Viking activity has been discovered in Ashton-under-Lyne. The "Ashton" part of the town's name probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period, and derives from Old English meaning "settlement by ash trees". The origin of the "under-Lyne" suffix is less clear; it possibly derives from the Brittonic-originating word ''lemo'' meaning elm or from Ashton's proximity to the Pennines. Lancashire ( , ; abbreviated Lancs) is the name of a historic county, ceremonial county, and non-metropolitan county in North West England. The boundaries of these three areas differ significantly. The non-metropolitan county of Lancashire was created by the Local Government Act 1972. It is administered by Lancashire County Council, based in Preston, and twelve district councils. Off-spin
Off spin is a type of finger spin bowling in cricket. A bowler who uses this technique is called an off spinner. Off spinners are right-handed spin bowlers who use their fingers to spin the ball. Their normal delivery is an off break, which spins from left to right (from the bowler's perspective) when the ball bounces on the pitch. For a right-handed batsman, this is from his off side to the leg side (that is, towards the right-handed batsman, or away from a left-handed batsman). The ball breaks ''away'' from the off side, hence the name 'off break'. Off spinners bowl mostly off breaks, varying them by adjusting the line and length of the deliveries. Lancashire County Cricket Club
Lancashire County Cricket Club represents the historic county of Lancashire in English cricket. The club has held first-class status since it was founded in 1864. Lancashire's home is Old Trafford Cricket Ground, although the team also play matches at other grounds around the county. The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) in Manchester, England, is the largest independent school (UK), independent day school for boys in the United Kingdom. Michael Atherton
Michael Andrew Atherton (born 23 March 1968) is a broadcaster, journalist and a former England international first-class cricketer. A right-handed opening batsman for Lancashire and England, and occasional leg-break bowler, he achieved the captaincy of England at the age of 25 and led the side in a record 54 Test matches. Known for his stubborn resistance during an era of hostile fast bowling, Atherton was described in 2001 as a determined defensive opener who made "batting look like trench warfare". He had several famed bouts with bowlers including South Africa's Allan Donald and Australia's Glenn McGrath. Atherton often played the anchor role at a time when England batting performances lacked consistency. Mark Andrew Crawley (born 16 December 1967) is a former English cricketer. Crawley was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium. He was born in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. Early career Crawley made his first-class debut for Oxford University against Kent in 1987. From 1987 to 1990, he represented the University in 24 first-class matches, the last of which came against Cambridge University. During his 4 seasons with the University, he scored 1,189 runs at a batting average of 44.03, with 8 half centuries, 3 centuries and a high score of 140. In the field he took 17 catches. With the ball he claimed 24 wickets at a bowling average of 62.29, with a single five wicket haul which gave him best figures of 6/92.
