Gary Portnoy
Gary Portnoy (born June 8, 1956) is an American musician and singer-songwriter. He is best known for co-writing and performing the main theme song of the NBC sitcom ''Cheers'', "Where Everybody Knows Your Name". Career In the early 1980s, Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo set out to write a theme for ''Cheers''. After their first two attempts were rejected, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" was selected. Prior to that, Portnoy's songs had been recorded by various artists, including Dolly Parton's "Say Goodnight" (co-written by Susan Sheridan) and Air Supply's "I'll Never Get Enough of You" (co-written by Jeanne Napoli and Judy Quay). He also recorded and released a self-titled album in 1980 for Columbia Records. The Kids from "Fame" was the group name of several cast members from the American TV series '' Fame'' who had a number of hit singles and albums at the height of the show's success in the United Kingdom. This success culminated in tours of Britain, where they performed live in concert. A live album was subsequently released. Background The group came to prominence in the summer of 1982 when the series first aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom and a song from the program, "Hi Fidelity", peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart. Arnold George Dorsey (born 2 May 1936), known professionally as Engelbert Humperdinck, is an English pop singer who has been described as "one of the finest middle-of-the-road balladeers around".
