Gary Merrington
Gary Merrington (born 19 November 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Merrington was recruited locally, from Footscray District Football League club Braybrook, and also played on the alternate day for Sunshine YCW. He played as a defender for most of his career, but also spent some time on the wing. Merrington was a member of Footscray's 1967 and 1970 night premierships. After retiring he continued serving the club as a recruiter and was their Football Manager during the 1990s. Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football team that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Founded in 1877 as the Footscray Football Club, and based in West Footscray in the old City of Footscray west of Melbourne, the club won nine premierships in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) before gaining admission to the Victorian Football League (which became the AFL in 1990) in 1925. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. The Victorian Football League night series, also known during its history by a variety of sponsored names, was an Australian rules football tournament held annually between 1956 and 1971, and again on three occasions in the late 1970's and 1980's. For most years the series was a consolation series, played on weekday nights each September as a knock-out tournament amongst teams which failed to reach the Victorian Football League finals. Andrew Merrington
Andrew Merrington (born 27 November 1978) is an Australian rules footballer. Merrington played TAC Cup football for the Calder Cannons, but was not immediately drafted and went to play for St Bernard's Old Collegians in the VAFA. Following a year at St Bernard's, he was recruited to the AFL by the Carlton Football Club in the 1999 National Draft, Merrington was considered a future key position/ ruckman prospect. However he only played 18 games with the Blues until the end of the 2003 season, where he was delisted after spending much time with either the Carlton reserves team or the Northern Bullants in the VFL, rather than the senior Carlton team. After being delisted he was recruited by East Perth in the WAFL. He immediately cemented himself a place in the side usually playing centre half forward, and was rewarded with state selection for Western Australia in his first year. Merrington won the 2005 F.D.
