Gary Jones (unionist)
Gary Jones (born September 1956) is a former American labor union leader, who was convicted of embezzlement. Jones began working as a furnace operator for the Ford Motor Company in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in 1975. There, he joined the United Auto Workers (UAW). He qualified as an accountant, and in 1990, began working in the UAW's accountancy department. He became the union's chief accountant in 1991, and then in 1995 became assistant to the union's secretary-treasurer. In 2004, he was appointed as assistant director of the union's Region 5, covering the west and southwest of the United States, and then became director of the region in 2014. In 2018, Jones was elected as president of the UAW, arguing for the union to be more militant, to work for social justice, and to support local communities. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
Broken Arrow is a city located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Oklahoma, primarily in Tulsa County, with a portion in western Wagoner County. It is the largest suburb of Tulsa. According to the 2010 census, Broken Arrow has a population of 98,850 residents and is the fourth-largest city in the state. However, a July 2019 estimate reported that the population of the city is just under 112,000, making it the 280th-largest city in the United States. The city is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area, which has a population of 1,023,988 residents. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad sold lots for the town site in 1902 and company secretary William S. The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, better known as the United Auto Workers (UAW), is an American labor union that represents workers in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada. It was founded as part of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the 1930s and grew rapidly from 1936 to the 1950s. The union played a major role in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party under the leadership of Walter Reuther (president 1946–1970). Dennis D. Williams (born May 1953) is a former American labor union leader, who was convicted of embezzlement. Union leader Williams grew up with a foster family, and served in the United States Marines. After being demobbed, he became a welder with J.I. Case in Rock Island, Illinois, and in 1977 he joined the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. In 1988, he began working full-time for the union's organizing department. He became a regional director in 2001, based in Chicago, during which time he was the first UAW leader to endorse Barack Obama's presidential bid. In 2010, Williams was elected as secretary-treasurer of the UAW. In this role, he was prominent in negotiating contracts with carmakers in Detroit, and was credited with securing an increase in membership dues, improving the union's finances. Rory Gamble
Rory Gamble (born 1956) is an American factory worker and trade unionist. In November 2019, Gamble became the acting president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor, Gary Jones. Jones was charged with and later convicted on fraud charges. He became the first African-American president of the UAW approximately one month after the conclusion of the 2019 General Motors strike. Because of the scandal which brought him to the position of president, UAW faced a potential federal takeover, which he was able to avoid by agreeing to financial safeguards and a court-appointed monitor to oversee operations for six years as well as direct election of UAW officers by membership.
