Gary J. Schmidt
Gary J. Schmidt (born January 26, 1947) is a former member of the Wisconsin State Assembly for the 5th District. Schmidt was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. He graduated from a high school in Oneida, Wisconsin before attending the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity, the William Mitchell College of Law and Minnesota State University, Mankato. During the Vietnam War era, Schmidt served in the United States Marine Corps. He is married and has three children. Political career Schmidt was first elected to the Assembly in 1984. Kaukauna, Wisconsin
Kaukauna () is a city in Outagamie and Calumet counties, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the Fox River, approximately north of Milwaukee. The population was 15,462 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Appleton, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Kaukauna is a Native American word and in various languages means "portage", "long portage", "place where pickerel are caught", and "place of pike". This area was traditionally home to the Ho-Chunk and Menominee peoples. The first Europeans in the area were the French. The first Catholic missionary in the area, Fr. Claude Allouez, commented on the "apple trees and vine stalks in abundance" that he found the people of Kaukauna cultivating.
