Gary, Indiana
Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The city has been historically dominated by major industrial activity and is home to U.S. Steel's Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America. Gary is located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan about east of downtown Chicago, Illinois. The city is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park, and is within the Chicago metropolitan area. Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. U.S. Steel had established the city as a company town to serve its steel mills. Although initially a very diverse city, after white flight in the 1970s, the city of Gary held the nation's highest percentage of African Americans for several decades. As of the 2020 census the city's population was 70,093, making it Indiana's ninth-largest city. Kang Hee-gun (; born February 24, 1978), better known by his stage name Gary ( ko, 개리, often spelled as Garie), is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and television personality. Besides being a solo artist, he is also the rapper and lyricist of the former hip hop duo Leessang. Since their formation in 2002, the group has produced a total of eight albums and had several hits under their belt. In 2014, Gary made his debut as a solo artist with the mini-album ''Mr.Gae''. Gary is a city located along the Tug Fork River in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 762. It was named for Elbert Henry Gary, one of the founders of U.S. Steel. The former coal towns of Elbert, Filbert, Thorpe, and Wilcoe became part of Gary at the time of its incorporation in 1971. History In 1902, U.S. Steel began housing people in Gary Hollow for employment at one of the coal town's fourteen mines that produced metallurgical coal. Gary – New Duluth is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Although called ''Gary–New Duluth'' by most people in the area, and even identified by local traffic signs as being so named, they are two separate neighborhood communities. Commonwealth Avenue (State Highway 23), Becks Road ( County Road 3), and Gary Street are three of the main routes in the community. The neighborhood of Gary begins as one enters under the railroad bridge on Commonwealth Avenue and ends at Gary Builders Supply. Gary contains most of the business district of the two neighborhoods, such as the Minit Mart and Milk House areas. The 'Gary' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History Gary was a seedling of the Carrie mango. It was named after horticulturalist and nursery owner Gary Zill. This continued a tradition of mangoes named after members of the Zill family, which include the Zill, Dot, and Carrie cultivars as well. The Gary has been sold as a nursery stock tree in Florida. Gary trees are planted in the collections of the USDA's germplasm repository in Miami, Florida and the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida.
