Garth (comics)
Garth is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly associated with Aquaman and the Teen Titans. Created by writer Robert Bernstein (comics), Robert Bernstein and artist Ramona Fradon, he first appears in ''Adventure Comics'' #269 in February 1960. He was originally known as the first incarnation of Aqualad. As a young adult, the character would later choose to adopt the alias Tempest. In the DC Universe, the character starts out originally as the teen sidekick and protégé to his guardian, the superhero known as Aquaman, originally possessing similar abilities. Unlike his guardian and mentor, the character is a fully-blooded Atlantean and originates from a tribe in Atlantis known as the Idyllist, a peaceful tribe mostly consisting of pacifists. A garth is an enclosed quadrangle or yard, especially one surrounded by a cloister (Middle English; Old Norse ''garþr, garðr''; akin to Anglo-Saxon ''geard''). This led to the word being given as a last name to people who worked in or near a garden. Later it came to be used as a first name. It is also possible that the name Garth comes from Gareth ɡarɛθ a Welsh masculine given name of uncertain meaning. It first appeared in this form in Thomas Malory's '' Le Morte d'Arthur'', in which it belonged to Sir Gareth, a brother of Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Garth (Guilsfield)
Garth was an important early gothic revival house in the township of Garth in Guilsfield in Montgomeryshire. In the 18th century it became the home of the Mytton family who had originally been Shrewsbury drapers, who derived their wealth from the Montgomeryshire woollen industry. They had settled at Pontysgawrhyd in Meifod and at Halston in Shropshire. The most famous members of the family were General Mytton, the Parliamentary Commander in the Civil War in the Marches and “Mad Jack Mytton”, the eccentric 19th-century squire of Halston. In 1809 a grandiose rebuilding scheme was started by Richard Mytton. However, this together with extravagant furnishing of the new house and reckless purchasing of surrounding farms, which culminated in the purchase of the Trefnannau estate in 1812 for £33,625, led to financial problems. Garth is a village in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. Garth is situated to the east of the town of Maesteg, and lies at the northernmost end of the Llynfi Valley. During the 19th century Garth was an industrial coal-mining village which contained its own colliery, the Garth Merthyr Colliery. History Before the 19th century, Garth like much of the Llynfi Valley was a rural area with sparsely populated farmhouses and labouring settlements. With the opening of two ironworks at Maesteg at the start of the century, the gradual industrialization saw the construction of villages in the area, including Garth. Garth Hill (usually called The Garth, or Garth Mountain, ''Mynydd y Garth'' in Welsh) is a hill located in between the communities of Llantwit Fardre and Pentyrch in Wales. The Garth can be seen from nearly the whole of the city of Cardiff and the Taff Valley, and on a sunny, clear day as far as Weston-super-Mare across the Bristol Channel in southwest England. It lies adjacent to the Taff Vale with the village of Pentyrch on one side and looks down onto the small villages of Gwaelod-y-Garth and Taff's Well. The Garth has a number of tumuli on its top. HM Prison Garth is a Category B men's prison, located in the village of Ulnes Walton (near Leyland), in Lancashire, England. Garth is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and is situated next to HMP Wymott. History Garth Prison was opened in October 1988, and a new residential unit (housing 120 prisoners) opened on 2 July 1997. In 1998, inmates put out a contract on a police dog called Scooby because of its track record in locating illegal drugs at the jail, requiring home security measures and, once, armed police. John MacDonald Of Garth
John MacDonald of Garth (1771 – 25 January 1866) was a colourful character involved in the Canadian fur trade. He was an enthusiastic duellist and a shrewd businessman who became a partner in the North West Company and a member of the Beaver Club at Montreal, Lower Canada. In an account of his exploits, he was described as having "indomitable courage... brave, reckless and domineering, with a decided tendency to seek redress with his own hands," characteristics that made him well-suited to his profession. Built in 1816, his home, Inverarden House, near Cornwall, Upper Canada, was later designated a National Historic Site of Canada. Gwaelod-y-garth (Welsh for ''Foot of the Garth'') is a village in the community of Pentyrch, Cardiff in Wales. Location Gwaelod-y-garth is located in Taff Valley at the foot of Garth Hill, north of central Cardiff and south of Pontypridd. The castle of Castell Coch is within reach of the village, by car or on foot. History In Elizabethan times, Gwaelod-y-Garth was noted for its iron-ore mines. The mines were opened between 1565 and 1625, and re-opened in the 19th century by the Blackmoor Booker company. In the early 1990s, a campaign was held to save the site. The Pentyrch Iron Works was opened in Gwaelod-y-Garth in 1740 (Gwaelod-y-Garth was then in the parish of Pentyrch). It supplied iron to the Melingriffith Tin Plate Works in Whitchurch, about downriver.
