Garske is an unincorporated community in Ramsey County, in the U.S. state of North Dakota. History A Jewish homesteading community named the Garske Colony was settled in 1883 and lasted until about 1925. The Sons of Jacob Cemetery, its cemetery, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June, 2017. The cemetery is located about from the present-day unincorporated community of Garske as located on Google maps (which matches the coordinates of the GNIS listing for Garske). Ramsey County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 11,605. Its county seat is Devils Lake. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873, with areas partitioned from Pembina County. The county was named for Alexander Ramsey, a U.S. Senator from Minnesota. The county government was not completed at that time, and the county was not attached to another county for administrative or judicial purposes. This situation continued until January 25, 1883, when the county government was effected. The county's boundaries were altered twice in March 1883, twice more in 1885, and in 1890. Jewish homesteaders came from Russia, where they were not allowed to own land, and tried to survive in harsh conditions in North Dakota. Many built sod houses or tarpaper shacks to live in while attempting to prove their land claims for under the Homestead Act. There once were nine rural Jewish cemeteries in North Dakota. The cemetery of the largest Jewish farming community in the state, the Ashley Jewish Homesteaders Cemetery, was listed on the National Register in May 2015.
