Garrison Savannah
The Garrison Savannah in the country of Barbados, is a horse racing venue located within the Garrison Historic Area, just outside the capital-city Bridgetown. A clockwise grass course, the Garrison Savannah is known internationally for the annual Barbados Gold Cup for Thoroughbreds which takes place on the six-furlong track around the perimeter of the green. The racetrack also is host to the annual Barbados Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing series. Racing has taken place at the location since the days that a British garrison was stationed there. In 2012 a network of subterranean tunnels were found to exist below the area. Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. It occupies an area of and has a population of about 287,000 (2019 estimate). Its capital and largest city is Bridgetown. Garrison Historic Area
St. Ann's Garrison, or more commonly known as "The Garrison", is a small district located in the country of Barbados. This Garrison Historic Area is situated about 2 miles south of Heroes Square in the capital-city Bridgetown, and just west of the village of Hastings in the neighbouring parish of Christ Church. It is dominated by its historic horse race-track, located on the 30 acre parade ground called the Garrison Savannah. The Garrison area additionally contains many historic buildings including barracks for military personnel. Barbados Gold Cup
The Barbados Gold Cup is a Barbadian Group I Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late February/early March since 1982 at the Garrison Savannah Racetrack in Bridgetown, Barbados. Contested over a turf course at a distance of 1,800 meters (8.95 furlongs), it is open to horses, age three or older. The most important event on the Barbados horse racing calendar, it was inaugurated in 1982 with the intention of attracting the top horses from Caribbean countries. Since 1997 the race has been sponsored by the Sandy Lane Hotel. In 1999, nineteen-year-old Attie S. Joseph III became the youngest owner to win the Gold Cup. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed.
