Garretson W. Gibson
Garretson Warner Gibson (May 20, 1832 – April 26, 1910) was the 14th president of Liberia from 1900 to 1904. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, his family emigrated to Liberia in 1845. After receiving an education in mission schools, he returned to Maryland to study theology. Ordained a priest, he served as rector of the Anglicanism, Episcopalian Trinity Church in Monrovia. He also served as Chaplain of the Liberian Senate. Later, he served as President of the Trustee Board of University of Liberia, Liberia College and at one time President of the college. Gibson began his political life as a justice of the peace. With the election of William D. Coleman (politician), William D. Coleman as president in 1896, Gibson was appointed Secretary of the Interior (Liberia), secretary of the interior. The president of the Republic of Liberia is the head of state and government of Liberia. The president serves as the leader of the executive branch and as commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia. Prior to the independence of Liberia in 1847, executive power in the Commonwealth of Liberia was held by the governor of Liberia, who was appointed by the American Colonization Society. The 1847 Constitution transferred the executive powers of the governorship to the presidency, which was largely modeled on the presidency of the United States. Between 1847 and 1980, the presidency was exclusively held by Americo-Liberians, the original American settlers of Liberia and their descendants. The Minister of Foreign Affairs is a cabinet minister of Liberia in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a government ministry responsible for conducting foreign relations of the country. Originally called the "Secretary of State", the position assumed its current name in 1972. Between 1848 and 1981, every officeholder came from Montserrado County, Liberia's most populous county.
