Allan Garraway
Allan George Weldon Garraway (14 June 1926 – 30 December 2014) was a British railway manager, responsible for restoring the abandoned Ffestiniog Railway in the 1950s. He was awarded an MBE in 1983. Early life Garraway was born on 14 June 1926 in Cambridge. He was educated at The Leys School in Cambridge, but was evacuated with the school to Pitlochry during the Second World War. He studied at St Catharine's College, Cambridge and graduated in 1947. Military career After leaving university, Garraway joined the Corps of Royal Engineers, and was posted to Germany, where he became the locomotive superintendent of the Detmold Military Railway and was promoted to the rank of captain. British Railways After the end of his military service, Garraway joined British Railways, training as a locomotive engineer at Doncaster Works. Annie Marie Watkins Garraway (born 1940) is an American mathematician who worked in telecommunications and electronic data transmission. She is also a philanthropist. Biography Garraway was born Annie Marie Watkins in Parsons, Kansas, the oldest daughter of Levi Watkins (1911–1994) and Lillian Bernice Varnado (1917–2013) who met when they were both high school teachers. Annie Marie attended Booker T. Washington High School and then enrolled in S. A. Owen Junior College, which her father had founded and served as the first president. As a freshman in 1957, she intended to major in engineering, but a math teacher at Owen, Juanita R. Turner, suggested that Annie Marie consider a different course of study. Sir Edward Charles Frederick Garraway, KCMG (10 March 1865 – 27 June 1932) was an Irish-born doctor and British colonial administrator who served as British Resident Commissioner in Bechuanaland and Basutoland. Life and career Garraway was the eldest son of Colonel Charles Sutton Garraway, of Rockshire, Waterford. He was educated at Waterford Diocesan School and at the medical school of Trinity College, Dublin. He then qualified as a licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, before being appointed assistant district surgeon at Millwood, Cape Colony, in 1888. He was appointed district surgeon at Kuruman, British Bechuanaland in 1891, and in 1892 he became surgeon to the Bechuanaland Border Police, with whom he participated in the First Matabele War in 1893. Fitz Garraway (born 5 September 1947) is a former Guyanese cricketer who played a single first-class match for Essequibo in the final of the 1980–81 inter-county Jones Cup. Aged 33, he was the oldest player on the side, a year older than Beni Sankar. Sir Henry Garway or Garraway (died July 1646) was an English merchant who was Lord Mayor of London in 1639. Garaway was the son of Sir William Garraway, farmer of the customs. Garraway was a city of London merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Drapers. He was one of the Court Assistants from 1614 to 1628 and a member of the committee of the East India Company from 1614 to 1643. On 30 January 1627, Garraway was elected an alderman of the City of London for Vintry ward. He was Sheriff of London and Master of the Drapers Company from 1627 to 1628. In 1631 he became colonel of the Trained Bands. He was Governor of the Levant Company from 1635 to 1643 and Deputy Governor of the East India Company from 1636 to 1639. In 1639 he became alderman of Broad Street ward, Master of the Drapers Company and Lord Mayor of London. He was knighted on 31 May 1640. Ken Garraway is a former Canadian soccer player. Club career Garraway played his youth soccer with the Lakehill Soccer Association in Victoria, British Columbia. Garraway played the summer of 1985 with the Victoria Riptides in the Western Soccer Alliance Challenge Cup. International career Garraway played 22 'A' internationals for the Canadian national soccer team. A forward, Garraway was a regular in the Canadian line-up from 1983 to 1985. Despite his 22 appearances however, he failed to score any national team goals. Garraway was also a member of the Canadian Olympic team that reached the quarter-finals of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, playing in 8 qualifying games.
