Garnets () are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. All species of garnets possess similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differ in chemical composition. The different species are pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular (varieties of which are hessonite or cinnamon-stone and tsavorite), uvarovite and andradite. Garnet Edward "Ace" Bailey (June 13, 1948 – September 11, 2001) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and scout who was a member of Stanley Cup– and Memorial Cup– winning teams. He died at the age of 53 while aboard United Airlines Flight 175, which crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City during the September 11 attacks. Garnet Jex
Garnet Wolesey Jex (October 19, 1895 – September 21, 1979) was an American artist and historian. Born in Kent, Ohio, he moved with his family to Washington, D.C., at the age of four. He remained in the Washington area until his death. Jex enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War I. After the war, he worked as a medical illustrator for the Army Medical Corps for two years and attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He earned a BA in 1927 and a Master's degree in 1931, both from George Washington University. While completing his master's degree, he worked as an art editor for the journal Nature. Later, Jex was employed as the Director of Graphics for the U.S. Bureau of State Services, and worked as an artist and designer at the United States Public Health Service for 26 years, until his retirement in 1962. John Garnet Hathaway (born November 23, 1991) is an American professional ice hockey forward for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Early life Hathaway was born in Naples, Florida, but moved to Kennebunkport, Maine with his family when he was six months old. John Garnet Exelby (born August 16, 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Atlanta Thrashers and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was particularly known for his aggressive style of play and his checking abilities. Playing career After one season played with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1998–99, Exelby was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the eighth round, 217th overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Garnet Clark
Garnet Clark, sometimes credited as Garnett Clark (February 16, 1917 – November 30, 1938), was an American jazz pianist. Clark began playing professionally in his birthplace of Washington, D.C., United States, at age 16 in Tommy Myles's band. By 1934, he was playing regularly in New York City clubs; in the mid-1930s he recorded with Alex Hill and Charlie Barnet. Benny Carter was playing with Barnet at the time, and he and Clark decided to quit Barnet's group and move to Europe in 1935 with Willie Lewis. While there he recorded with Django Reinhardt, although it was noted with only a hint of the prowess exhibited in New York, and also with Bill Coleman, but soon after left this group to play solo. He accompanied Adelaide Hall in Switzerland in the mid-1930s. In 1937, he suffered a nervous breakdown, ending his career. Garnet Campbell
Harry Garnet Campbell (31 July 1903 – 21 January 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Campbell, noted for his strong disposal skills and pace, was best suited as either a centreman or winger. Essendon won Grand Finals in his first two seasons, but he was not a member of their premiership sides, finding it hard to break into the team initially. He was a regular from 1925 onwards and in the 1926 Brownlow Medal count finished as Essendon's highest vote getter and equal fifth overall. Campbell, who represented Victoria at the 1927 Melbourne Carnival, was appointed captain-coach of Essendon in 1931 but his stint and VFL career ended in 1933 when they finished with the wooden spoon. Alexander Garnet Brown
Alexander Garnet Brown (May 2, 1930 – January 7, 2010) was a Canadian businessman and politician who served in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1969 to 1978. He represented the electoral district of Halifax Eastern Shore as a Liberal. Brown was an athlete in his youth, and was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing in their farm system for two years. In the 1950s, Brown and his father founded Atlantic Canada's largest food brokerage, A.G. Brown and Sons Ltd. He was also co-founder of Halifax Cablevision, and a founder and director of Dartmouth Cable Television. First elected in a by-election on July 8, 1969, Brown was re-elected in 1970 and 1974. He served until he was defeated in the 1978 general election. Brown served in the Executive Council of Nova Scotia for Premier Gerald Regan.
