Gardner J. Kingman House
The Gardner J. Kingman House is a historic house located at 309 Main Street in Brockton, Massachusetts. Description and history Built in 1886 to a design by the locally prominent architect Wesley Lyng Minor, this three story house was the first brick residence built in the city, and is one of its finest. It has Queen Anne styling, with a variety of projections, decorations, and gables, including its main front gable, which has a large terra cotta floral-patterned panel. The building was commissioned by Gardner Kingman, a businessman prominent in civic affairs and in the city's dominant shoe industry; it has served as a funeral home for many years. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1977. Wesley Lyng Minor
Wesley Lyng Minor (1851–1935) was an American architect in Massachusetts. Life and career Minor was born in Franklin, Louisiana on January 8, 1851, but moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts with his family at the age of seven. They later moved to Marion, Massachusetts, Marion and Middleborough, Massachusetts, Middleborough. He began studying architecture with a retired carpenter who taught at the Pierce Academy. Three years later, he moved to Boston, where he worked for William Robert Ware, William R. Ware. After a few months he moved to Philadelphia, where he worked for John McArthur Jr. A year later he went to New York City and worked for Richard Morris Hunt. In Brockton, he was a contemporary of Waldo V. Howard. In 1878, Minor established himself as an architect in Charleston, South Carolina. Queen Anne Style Architecture
The Queen Anne style of British architecture refers to either the English Baroque architecture of the time of Queen Anne (who reigned from 1702 to 1714) or the British Queen Anne Revival form that became popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
