Gardner Cave is located in extreme northeastern Washington state inside Crawford State Park. Gardner Cave is the longest limestone cave in Washington state with a length of . History A local bootlegger named Ed Gardner claimed to have discovered the cave in 1899 when the earth collapsed beneath him and his horse. He stored his moonshine in the cave because it had a constant temperature of . According to one account, Mr. Gardner lost his deed to the cave and adjacent lands to William Crawford in a game of poker. Metaline Limestone
Metaline is a town in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. The population was 173 at the 2010 census. History The Pend Oreille River was deepened at Box Canyon in 1906, allowing navigation to Metaline. The Metaline Mine then started producing lead from the Metaline Formation, a Middle Cambrian age limestone. By 1951, the mine had produced over 10,000 pounds of lead, and almost 37,000 pounds of zinc. In 1955, Metaline had a population of 400. Metaline was officially incorporated on October 6, 1948. Flowstone
Flowstones are sheetlike deposits of calcite or other carbonate minerals, formed where water flows down the walls or along the floors of a cave. They are typically found in "solution caves", in limestone, where they are the most common speleothem. However, they may form in any type of cave where water enters that has picked up dissolved minerals. Flowstones are formed via the degassing of vadose percolation waters.
