Gardner (surname)
Gardner is a surname of English, Scottish and Irish origin. Most sources say it is an occupational surname that comes from the word "gardener". Other sources claim that it is derived from the old English words ''gar-dyn'' meaning "warrior", "one who bears arms". In Ireland, the surname is an anglicized form of the Gaelic ''Mac'' ''Gairnéir''. Variants include Gardyner, Gardener, Gardenar, Gardinier, Gardiner, and Gardner; the last two are the most common today. Alexander Gardner (1877 – 1952) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a right half. Career Born in Leith, Gardner played for local club Leith Athletic then moved to Newcastle United at the end of 1899, making over 300 appearances in the English Football League and FA Cup over the next decade. Archibald Gardner
Archibald Gardner (September 2, 1814 – February 8, 1902) was a 19th-century pioneer and businessman who, with his knowledge of lumber- and grist mills, helped establish communities in Alvinston, Ontario; West Jordan, Utah; and Star Valley, Wyoming. In his lifetime Archibald built 36 gristmills and lumber mills — 23 in Utah, 6 in Canada, 5 in Wyoming, and 2 in Idaho — greatly benefiting the lives of those in the surrounding areas. Antony (Tony) John Gardner (27 December 192716 October 2011) was a British Labour Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1966 to 1970. A son of a gardener who worked in Dorset, Gardner was educated at an elementary school and then at Co-operative College and the University of Southampton. He worked in the engineering industry, then did national service, after which he worked in the building trade until 1953. He was President of the Southampton University Union from 1958 to 1959, and worked as an education officer for the Co-operative Union from 1959 to 1966. Anna Gardner (January 25, 1816 – February 18, 1901) was an American abolitionist and teacher, as well as an ardent reformer, a staunch supporter of women's rights, and the author of several volumes in prose and verse. Gardner, of Quaker ancestry, was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, in 1816, and died there in 1901.
