Gardenia Handicap
The Groupie Doll Stakes (known as the 'Gardenia Stakes / Gardenia Handicap' until 2015) is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early August at Ellis Park Race Course in Henderson, Kentucky. The event is open to three-year-olds & up fillies and mares. It is run at one mile ( 8 furlongs) on a conventional dirt surface. The race itself was initially named for the flower used in the winner's garland. The race is now named after the 2011 winner; Groupie Doll. The race was first run in 1982. Ellis Park Race Course
Ellis Park is a thoroughbred racetrack near Henderson, Kentucky, just south of Evansville, Indiana. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs Incorporated. While the track is located north of the Ohio River that forms the border between Kentucky and Indiana, which would put it within Indiana, the border is based on the course of the river at the time Kentucky became a state in 1792. Ellis Park was previously owned by Ellis Entertainment, a subsidiary of Laguna Development Corporation based out of New Mexico. In September 2022 Ellis Park was purchased by Churchill Downs Incorporated, owners of the thoroughbred track bearing the same name. History Ellis Park was built by the Green River Jockey Club in 1922. It initially held a harness meeting on the Grand Circuit for the total of $32,000 in purses for a five-day race meeting. Stephen R. "Steve" Margolis (born September 8, 1963 in New York City) is an American trainer of thoroughbred racehorses. Biography Steve Margolis graduated from high school and would begin working as a groom in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing at Belmont Park in Elmont, Long Island, New York for Hall of Fame trainer John Veitch. In the 1990s Margolis worked for trainers Pat Byrne and Howard Tesher and later on for Stanley Hough. In 1997 he went to Kentucky with Stanley Hough as an assistant and in 2000 became a horse trainer himself. On September 15, 2000, Margolis won his first race as a trainer at Turfway Park with a horse named Her Great Affair.
