History Early years In 1869, the Irish-born millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart bought a portion of the lightly populated Hempstead Plains. In a letter, Stewart described his intentions for Garden City: The central attraction of the new community was the Garden City Hotel. The administrative divisions of New York are the various units of government that provide local services in the State of New York.
