Gardelegi Dump
The Gardelegi dump is the municipal dump of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Spanish province of Álava. It is located south of the capital. It is as large as 52 football pitches, and it stores the non-degradable materials of the area. It is named for the nearby village of Gardelegi. History The Gardelegi dump opened in 1973. Initially, it was used by construction companies. In 1986, Gardelegi dump was declared the municipal dump of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Onandia Company fenced the area and constructed a building to control the scraps. The dump was improved over the years, but the most important work was done in 2003: the dump was expanded and a recycling plant was incorporated. The equipment for the plant, the biggest in Spain, cost more than seven million euros; it recycles rubbish before taking the remainder to the Gardelegi dump. Landfill
A landfill site, also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump, or dumping ground, is a site for the disposal of waste materials. Landfill is the oldest and most common form of waste disposal, although the systematic burial of the waste with daily, intermediate and final covers only began in the 1940s. In the past, refuse was simply left in piles or thrown into pits; in archeology this is known as a midden. Some landfill sites are used for waste management purposes, such as temporary storage, consolidation and transfer, or for various stages of processing waste material, such as sorting, treatment, or recycling.
