Garcia River Forest
The Garcia River Forest is a forest located in Mendocino County, California, about north of San Francisco. It is owned and managed by The Conservation Fund. The fund generates credits by logging a portion of the forest less intensely than is allowed under California law. These credits are sold to PG&E which retires them on behalf of customers enrolled in its ClimateSmart program. PG&E's ClimateSmart program is a program where customers voluntarily pay more on their utility bill to offset a percentage of their GHG emissions. The Conservation Fund
The Conservation Fund is a U.S. nonprofit organization with a dual charter to pursue environmental preservation and economic development. From 2008–2018, it has placed more than 500,000 acres under conservation management through a program whose goal is to purchase and permanently protect working forests. A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit a set amount of carbon dioxide or the equivalent amount of a different greenhouse gas (tCO2e). Carbon credits and carbon markets are a component of national and international attempts to mitigate the growth in concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs).
