Garbis Aprikian
Garbis Aprikian (born 1926) is a musician from the Armenian Diaspora. He has composed many vocal and instrumental works in which Western musical technique (counterpoint, fugue...) marries Armenian melodies. As a performer, Garbis Aprikian has directed for about fifty years the Armenian mixed chorus of Paris Sipan-Komitas. His contribution in the European knowledge of the works of Komitas Vardapet, Komitas, Ganatchian and Alemshah is crucial . Biography Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1926, Garbis Aprikian took part in the cultural and artistic life of this cosmopolitan city when he was very young . He studied at primary school "Armenian National Boghossian," then the American College. Garbis Kortian
Garbis Kortian ( hy, Կարպիս Գորդեան; February 15, 1938August 23, 2009) was a philosopher and political theorist. Kortian was born to an Armenian family in Kessab, Mandatory Syria on February 15, 1938. He acquired his PhD in philosophy from the University of Vienna in 1966; his dissertation was on Wilhelm von Humboldt. Kortian taught at Université de Montréal from 1968 to 1995 and, sporadically, at UC Berkeley, McGill University, Université Laval, Balliol College, Oxford, and Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He was one of the founders of the Zoryan Institute, a non-profit organization based in Toronto, Canada. He died in Vienna, Austria. He spoke Armenian, French, German, and English. Garbis Zakaryan
Garbis Zakaryan ( hy, Կարպիս Զաքարեան), (June 2, 1930 – 25 January 2020) was a Turkish and European welterweight boxing champion of Armenian ethnicity. He was the first Turkish professional boxer. He was nicknamed "Demir Yumruk" ("Iron Fist"). Life and career Zakaryan was born in Istanbul, of Armenian descent, and studied at the local Armenian Esayan school. His father couldn't work because of poor health and his mother would make the entire household living from knitting. He left school at 5th grade and began working as a newspaper salesman. He began his boxing career in 1944 at the Boğaziçi Turnuvası (Bosporus Tournament). He became the Istanbul and Turkey champion at 48 kg in 1947 and 1948. Garbis İstanbulluoğlu (24 February 192717 February 1994), known as with his given nickname Tenekeci Gabris, - literally meaning "'' Tinsmith''", was a former Turkish football player and coach. Edgar William Garbisch (April 7, 1899 – December 13, 1979) was an American college football player, military officer, businessman and art collector. He played eight years of college football at Washington & Jefferson College (1917–1920) and the United States Military Academy (1921–1924) and was an College Football All-America Team, All-American each year from 1922 to 1924. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. Garbisch was the sales manager of the Postum cereal company in the late 1920s and early 1930s and president of Cellulose Products Corp. and Tisch Inc., in the 1930s. During World War II, he served as a colonel in the U.S. Army and was responsible for directing all military construction in New England and New York, including 39 Army airfields and embarkation camps.
