Admiral Jayant Ganpat ''"Podgy"'' Nadkarni, PVSM, AVSM, NM, VSM, ADC (5 December 1931 – 2 July 2018) was an Indian Navy Admiral who served as the 13th Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy from 1 December 1987 to 30 November 1990. Early life and education Nadkarni was born on 5 December 1931. He was a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the Naval War College. Naval career Nadkarni completed training at ''TS Dufferin'' and joined the Royal Indian Navy in March 1949. He received his basic training at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, on the training cruiser and at other establishments of the Royal Navy. He specialized in navigation and direction. Thakur Ganpat Singh (17 August 1895?) was an Indian politician. Biography Thakur Ganpat Singh was born in Kharwa, Rajasthan, Kharwa village. A descendant of Rao Jodha, he was the son of the Istimrardar of Khawra Rao Gopal Singh Kharwa, Thakur Gopal Singh. Ganpat Singh studied at Mayo College in Ajmer. He succeeded his father as Istimrardar, taking over the family estate in May 1931. As of the 1930s the estate consisted of fifteen villages. During the Second World War, he held the rank of Captain and served in the Western Command. Ganpat Singh was elected to the Ajmer Legislative Assembly in the 1951 Ajmer Legislative Assembly election, 1951 election. He stood as the Bharatiya Jan Sangh candidate in the Nayanagar constituency. He obtained 1,958 votes (36.82%), defeating the Indian National Congress candidate Bheron by a margin of 111 votes. However, Bheron petitioned the Election Tribunal, calling into question the result. Martin Louis Alan Gompertz (February 23, 1886 – September 29, 1951) was a British soldier and writer, born in India, also known by the pseudonym of 'Ganpat', which was the nearest his Indian troops could get to pronouncing 'Gompertz'. Ganpat is another name for the elephant god Ganesh. He started his writing career with articles for 'Blackwood's Magazine' on his service in East Africa during World War 1. He wrote many adventure stories in the style of H. Rider Haggard, though most of Ganpat's stories are set in the Himalayas. He was an Anglo Indian soldier, and his stories reflect his military and frontier background. He retired in 1939 with the rank of Brigadier, ending his days in the town of Chagford, on the edge of Dartmoor, where he could pursue his passion for fishing.
