Río Gallegos (Local ) is the capital and largest settlement of the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz in Argentina. Located in the department of Güer Aike, it has a population of about 98,000, according to the , a 24% increase from the 79,000 in the . The city bears the name of the Gallegos River, and sits on its estuary south from the Argentinian federal capital Buenos Aires. Established on 19 December 1885 to increase Argentine power over southern Patagonia, Río Gallegos became the capital of the then Territory of Santa Cruz in 1888, retaining its status when the territory became a province in 1957. San Felices de los Gallegos is a village and large municipality in the province of Salamanca, western Spain, part of the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is located 102 kilometers from the provincial capital city of Salamanca and has a population of 442 people, with a 2017 Wolfram Alpha estimate placing it at 427. It is situated within the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. History As a result of the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297 the village became part of the Kingdom of Portugal, with the name of ''São Felix de Galegos'', along with other Spanish towns: Hermisende (''Ermesende'' in Portuguese), Salvaterra de Miño (''Salvaterra do Minho''), Olivenza (''Olivença''; including the current municipality of Táliga). The Gallegos River () is a river in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz, on whose estuary lies Río Gallegos city, capital of the province. Given that its basin reaches only the fringes of the Andes mountains it classifies as a sub-Andean river. The is contradicting information on where river is actually formed. According to one source it forms at the confluence of the rivers Rubens and Penitente. Yet according to another source Rubens River is just a tributary of Penitente River and Gallegos River originates further downstream at the confluence of the rivers Penitentes and Turbio. After traveling Gallegos River reaches the Atlantic Coast. On its way east, after crossing a wide glaciated canyon, it meets the tributaries Turbio, Cóndor, and Zurdo. The Rómulo Gallegos International Novel Prize ( es, Premio internacional de novela Rómulo Gallegos) was created on 6 August 1964 by a presidential decree enacted by Venezuelan president Raúl Leoni, in honor of the Venezuelan politician and President Rómulo Gallegos, the author of '' Doña Bárbara''. The declared purpose of the prize is to "perpetuate and honor the work of the eminent novelist and also to stimulate the creative activity of Spanish language writers".
