Dionisio Alcalá Galiano
Dionisio Alcalá Galiano (8 October 1760 – 21 October 1805) was a Spanish naval officer, cartographer, and explorer. He mapped various coastlines in Europe and the Americas with unprecedented accuracy using new technology such as chronometers. He commanded an expedition that explored and mapped the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Strait of Georgia, and made the first European circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. He reached the rank of brigadier and died during the Battle of Trafalgar. He sometimes signed his full surname, Alcalá-Galiano, but often used just Galiano. The published journal of his 1792 voyage uses just the name Galiano, and this has become the name by which he is most known. Early life Galiano was born in Cabra, Córdoba, Spain, in 1760. María Elena Galiano (1928 – October 30, 2000) was an Argentine arachnologist. She was one of the leading taxonomists of Neotropical jumping spiders. Galiano worked at the Bernardino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Museum in Buenos Aires. She died in an accident on October 30, 2000. The genera ''Galianora'' and ''Galianoella'' are named in her honor. Mateus Galiano da Costa (born 19 June 1984), known simply as Mateus, is an Angolan professional footballer who plays as a forward for Portuguese club U.D. Leiria. He spent practically all of his career in Portugal, recording 280 games and 51 goals in the Primeira Liga. He represented four teams in the division, mainly Nacional and Boavista. Mateus made his debut for Angola in 2006 and earned 68 caps. He was selected for the 2006 World Cup and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
