Galerix Kostakii
''Galerix kostakii'' is a fossil Erinaceidae, erinaceid mammal from the early Miocene of Greece. It is known from the site of Karydia, Rhodope, Karydia, assigned to the biostratigraphy, biostratigraphical zone MN 4 (biostratigraphic zone), MN 4; similar fossils have been found at an approximately contemporary Czech Republic, Czech site and a slightly younger Greek site. With characters like the presence of a hypocone (fourth cusp (dentistry), cusp) on the upper third premolar, the presence of a connection between the protocone and metaconule cusps on the second upper molar (tooth), molar in only a few specimens, this species is intermediate between the slightly older ''Galerix symeonidisi'' and the slightly younger ''Parasorex pristinus''. It may form part of the lineage leading from the genus ''Galerix'' to the younger genus ''Parasorex''. Early Miocene
The Early Miocene (also known as Lower Miocene) is a sub-epoch of the Miocene Epoch made up of two stages: the Aquitanian and Burdigalian stages. The sub-epoch lasted from 23.03 ± 0.05 Ma to 15.97 ± 0.05 Ma (million years ago). It was preceded by the Oligocene epoch. As the climate started to get cooler, the landscape started to change. New mammals evolved to replace the extinct animals of the Oligocene epoch. The first members of the hyena and weasel family started to evolve to replace the extinct ''Hyaenodon'', entelodonts and bear-dogs. The chalicotheres survived the Oligocene epoch. Many different terms have been proposed for features of the tooth crown in mammals. The structures within the molars receive different names according to their position and morphology. In biostratigraphy, MN 5 is one of the MN zones used to characterize the fossil mammal faunas of the Neogene of Europe. It is preceded by MN 4 and followed by MN 6 and is part of the Orleanian age of the middle Miocene.
